Cross Country Opens Season With Win At Hofstra Invitational

QUEENS, N.Y. - For the second consecutive year, the St. John's cross country team opened its season with a victory at the Hofstra Invitational 5K, held at Bethpage State Park.
The Red Storm placed seven runners in the top 10 Division I finishers to earn 18 points. Host Hofstra University finished second with 46 points, while NJIT finished third with 78 points.
St. John's was led by sophomore Aryon Trujillo who finished first overall with a time of 19:58.42, an improvement of nearly 25 seconds over last year's top five performance.
The sophomore was closely followed by junior Sarah Sudbury and newcomer Michelle Duffy. Sudbury clocked in at 20:08.91 while Duffy crossed the line 20:15.84. Nicole Cocozza and Sarah Fry rounded out the point scorers for St. John's as they finished fifth (20:36.09) and seventh (20:47.37) overall respectively.
Newcomer Stephanie Barnes joined senior Pamela Petruski as they crossed the line eighth and ninth overall clocking in right before the 21-minute mark. Barnes finished in 20:48.96, while Petruski improved nearly a minute over her performance from last season with a time of 20:52.27.
Freshman Alexis Bean finished eighth among Red Storm runners with a time of 21:01.71. Junior Lori Dougherty clocked in at 21:13.54, good for 13th place overall.
Fellow junior Katrina Schaefer set a new career-best time in the 5K distance with a time of 21:29.94, topping her previous best of 22:10.0.
Juniors Kim Piard and René Cousins finished 21st and 26th overall.
The Red Storm's next competition will be on Saturday, Sept. 19th when they take part in the Iona Meet of Champions at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y.
