MADISON, Conn. - The St. John's cross country team placed 28th overall at the 2010 NCAA Northeast Regionals, paced by season-best performances by three of the team's top five runners. This year's 6K meet was hosted by Yale University and Fairfield University at Hammonasset State Park in Madison, Conn.
The Red Storm improved four spots from last year's 32nd place team finish, and the squad finished ahead of local rivals Fordham and Manhattan.
"I was very pleased with our team performance today," said head coach Jim Hurt. "We moved up in our NCAA placement and really competed hard. When you have less than a minute between your top five runners, you know you are sticking together as a team."
Freshman Chelsea Trant placed first on the team for the first time this season, running a career-best time of 22:59 and placing 147th overall. She was closely followed by junior Samantha Meyerhoff who crossed the line in 23:06.
Junior Nicole Cocozza turned in a career-best performance as she finished in 23:14. Classmate Aryon Trujillo ran a time of 23:47, and senior Sarah Sudbury came in right behind her to round out the scoring five with a time of 23:50.
Freshman Angela Jarvela crossed the line in 24:57, and senior Katrina Schaefer ran a time of 27:42.
St. John's will return to New York to run in the ECAC Championships at Van Cortlandt Park on Nov. 20.
