Reinhardt ties a season-high six saves
The St. John's women's soccer team played Providence to a scoreless tie on Thursday evening at Belson Stadium for the Johnnies first double overtime draw of the 2018 campaign.
After earning a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for her stellar effort last week, transfer Meredith Reinhardt was flawless again for the home team. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native tied a season-high six saves, recording her second shutout of the 2018 campaign and has now tallied six saves on four different occasions for the Red Storm.
Providence controlled the pace for a majority of the first half, testing Reinhardt and the backline early, recording the opening three shots on goal. In the 16th minute, the Friars nearly broke the deadlock when Hannah McNulty worked her way into a dangerous scoring range and fired a shot toward the right corner of the cage before Reinhart came up big for the Johnnies with the stop. This marked the redshirt sophomores first save of the evening. The Friars had a 7-4 shooting advantage over the Red Storm as the two programs entered the intermission.
The Johnnies saw their best chance of the opening stanza come in the 25th minute with a strike from the team's leading scorer, Zsani Kajan. The Budapest, Hungary, native made a breakaway for the goal before powering a shot toward the left side of the net but her attempt went wide to keep the score knotted at zero.
The Red Storm turned up the heat following the break, turning its first shot on goal in the 52nd minute off the foot of Claudia Cagnina. The senior from Lindenhurst, N.Y., blistered a shot towards the cage and forced the Friars' goalkeeper to make a save.
St. John's continued to control the momentum in the second half, as Samie Scaffidi made a go for the goal in the 66th minute. The senior took a shot from just inside the box but her attempt ricochet off the post to keep the match scoreless. Just over 15 minutes later the Johnnies saw a second attempt rebound off the woodwork as Kayla Mesaros made beautiful cross pass that arched over the defensive wall to senior Lucy Whipp. The Ormskirk, England, native settled the ball, before ripping it just high of the net as it bounced off the crossbar and over the cage to send the match into overtime scoreless
Both programs played evenly over the next 20 minutes, registering two shots a piece but neither team was able to find the back of the net as the teams had to settle for a draw.
The Red Storm will return to action on Sunday afternoon, welcoming Butler to Belson Stadium for senior day, first kick is scheduled for 1 p.m.
