Three unanswered goals in the fourth quarter lift the Red Storm past the Panthers.
HIGH POINT, N.C. – After being down 9-7 with 13:23 left to play, the St. John's lacrosse team stormed back with three unanswered goals to complete the upset over No. 11/13 High Point on Saturday, 10-9.
"I couldn't be prouder of our guys," said head coach Jason Miller. "We hung in there all day and ground it out at the end. Just a really tough, tough win."
For the Red Storm, the win over the Panthers marked its second-straight road victory of the season and the first win over a ranked opponent on the road since the Johnnies defeated top-ranked Notre Dame, 12-10, on March 30, 2013. Before Saturday's contest, the Red Storm hadn't beaten a ranked opponent since March 24, 2018, when the Johnnies upset No. 19/18 Hofstra, 9-8.
Freshman netminder Brody Agres recorded a career-high, 12 saves, in 60 minutes of action for the Red Storm.
"Brody was great today," said Miller. "He's gotten better every week, with room to keep improving. That's a big win for any goalie, let alone a freshman. I'm really happy for him."
Mike and Joe Madsen paced the way offensively for St. John's (2-1), as the brothers each scored three goals. Mike Madsen also dished an assist on a goal scored by his brother.
Three other members of the Red Storm tallied goals, as Jonathan Huber scored twice, while Declan Swartwood and Chris Buscemi each found the back of the net once.
In total, eight different Johnnies tallied points in the contest, including sophomore faceoff specialist Joseph Fitzpatrick and freshman Matt Duncan, both earning their first career assists in the win over the Panthers.
Fitzpatrick and Colin Bosak split duties as the faceoff specialists in the first half. Luke Roediger stepped in at the X in the second half and played a pivotal role in the comeback win.
St. John's scored the first goal for the third-straight game as Buscemi put a shot past High Point keeper Tim Troutner Jr. within the first minute of the game.
The Red Storm and the Panthers would continue to trade goals for the rest of the first half. High Point took a 6-4 lead into the locker room, despite committing 14 turnovers compared to St. John's seven.
Coming out of the intermission, the Johnnies scored the first goal of the half. Mike Madsen fired a pass from Buscemi past the High Point netminder to cut the deficit to one goal. The two would connect once more in the third quarter before High Point added a goal to take an 8-7 lead into the fourth period.
After High Point's Ben Baker scored the first goal of the fourth quarter, the Johnnies would score the last three goals of the game within the final ten minutes of play. Mike Madsen scored an unassisted goal to make it a 9-8 game with ten minutes left in the game. Huber tied the contest with a goal, assisted by Duncan on a fastbreak with 9:25 left in the fourth. Joe Madsen completed his hat trick by scoring the game-winning goal with 8:16 left in the game.
The Red Storm contained High Point's best scorer, Asher Nolting, to just one goal for the entire contest. The Johnnies caused the sophomore, who came into Saturday's game with a program-record 21 points through the first three games of the season, to commit a game-high nine turnovers.
"We did a great job adapting," said Miller. "We had to handle a lot of adversity in order to get the win."
St. John's returns to action next Saturday as the Johnnies host Michigan at DaSilva Memorial Field on March 2 at noon.
