Madsen records one goal and two assists in setback to the Pride
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The St. John's lacrosse team dropped its third-straight contest Tuesday night, falling to the Hofstra Pride, 9-7, at James M. Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, N.Y.
Mike Madsen was a bright spot for the Red Storm (2-4) offensively, finishing with one goal and two assists. Colin Duffy and Joe Madsen led St. John's in scoring, registering two goals apiece against the Pride. Declan Swartwood and Chris Buscemi also finished with two points, recording one goal and one assist each.
In the loss to Hofstra, freshman goalkeeper Brody Agres recorded 12 saves for the Red Storm, with four of those stops coming in the first period alone.
Four different Johnnies lined up at the X for on Tuesday night, with Colin Bosak and Joseph Fitzpatrick each recording two faceoff wins.
Despite falling to the Pride, the Red Storm capitalized on man-up opportunities, scoring on three of its four chances with the man advantage.
The Red Storm started the game on a high note, scoring the first goal of the contest. The Johnnies have now recorded the opening goal in five-straight games this season. Madsen netted his lone goal of the showdown two minutes into the first quarter to give his team an early lead.
Hofstra's Ryan Kinnard scored his first of three goals with 7:24 to play in the first quarter, to level the score at one.
Entering the second stanza, Hofstra's Nick Williams opened up scoring for the two teams at the 12:10 mark, to give the Pride a 2-1 advantage. Duffy and Buscemi responded, stringing together two unanswered goals to help St. John's regain the lead, 3-2.
Less than two minutes later, the Pride's Ryan Tierney tied the score at three with just over six minutes to play in the second period. Choosing not to sit back, the Red Storm kept its foot on the pedal, as Duffy netted his second goal of the period, to increase the Red Storm's advantage back to one.
The Pride would not go away, striking one more time with just under a minute to play, sending both programs into the locker room tied at four goals apiece.
Coming out of the intermission, the Red Storm started the second half with two quick goals from Madsen, earning St. John's its largest lead of the game, 6-4. The Pride retaliated, firing off four unanswered goals to enter the final frame with an 8-6 advantage.
Hofstra added to its lead early in the fourth quarter, finding the back of the net just two minutes into the final period, making it a three-goal game.
Swartwood would score a man-up goal off of an assist from Madsen to bring the Johnnies within two goals, but that was as close as the Red Storm would get as the Pride cemented the victory.
St. John's will look to snap its three-game losing streak next Tuesday afternoon at DaSilva Memorial Field, as the Johnnies host Dartmouth at 3 p.m.
