St. John’s looks to win its third road contest of the season on Saturday.
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's lacrosse team returns to action this Saturday, traveling to Loudonville, N.Y., for a 1 p.m. contest against Siena at Hickey Field.
The Red Storm (2-2) will look to remain undefeated away from home this season, having already picked up road victories at Hartford and No. 11/13 High Point last month. Both of the Johnnies losses this season have come at home against opponents either ranked or receiving votes in national polls, falling to No. 12/12 in their season opener before dropping a decision to Michigan on Saturday at DaSilva Memorial Field.
Chris Buscemi and Joe Madsen led the way offensively for St. John's against Michigan, as the upperclassman duo tallied two goals and two assists apiece.
Two other members of the Red Storm finished with multi-goal games, as Jonathan Huber recorded his second hat trick of the season and Declan Swartwood found the back of the net twice.
In total, seven Johnnies logged points on the contest. Senior defenseman Aidan Marron scored from the far side of the field in the contest's closing seconds for his first career goal.
Freshman netminder Brody Agres started the game for the Red Storm but was replaced by Gavin Catalano midway through the third quarter. Catalano recorded four saves in his first 24 minutes of action this season.
Joseph Fitzpatrick, Colin Bosak, and Luke Roediger split the faceoff duties, as Michigan narrowly topped St. John's at the X, 16-15. Fitzpatrick and Bosak combined to win 14 of the team's 31 faceoff attempts.
Saturday's showdown will mark the fourth game of the season for the Saints and the second at Hickey Field. Siena comes into Saturday's game averaging 14.0 goals per game, which is tied for seventh-best in the nation. Their lone win of the season came in overtime against UMass-Lowell on Feb. 23. Senior attackman Mike Reilly scored his fourth goal of the game just eleven seconds into the extra period to clinch 16-15 win for the Saints.
Reilly leads Siena with 11 goals this season and is tied for the team lead in points (15) with senior attackman Keenan Cook. Cook has scored nine goals and has dished out a team-high six assists. Aaron Lewis has seen 154 minutes of action as Siena's netminder. The Bay Shore, N.Y., native has recorded 29 saves this season and boasts a save percentage of 40.3% heading into Saturday's contest.
Liam Gleason was named the 10th head coach in Siena Lacrosse history on June 26, 2018. Gleason spent the previous seven seasons as the associate head coach at perennial national power Albany. Before that, Gleason spent three years as an assistant coach at Siena from 2009-2011.
Saturday's contest in Loudonville, will mark the 24th meeting between the Red Storm and the Saints. The two teams have met in each of the past eight seasons, a span that has seen the Johnnies record six wins, including three straight against their Empire State foe.
Last season, the Red Storm exploded for 11 goals during the opening 30 minutes in a 14-7 win over Siena at DaSilva Memorial Field. Joe Madsen collected four points, finishing with a trio of goals and an assist.
After Saturday's contest with the Saints, the Johnnies will make a short trip east to reignite a longstanding local rivalry when they take on Hofstra on March 12 at James M. Shuart Stadium. Last season, the Johnnies topped the No. 19/18 Pride in Queens, picking up the program's first win over a ranked opponent in five years.
