Agres recorded three of his 13 total saves in the first period, keeping the score tied at one goal apiece after the first 15 minutes of play.
The physical play from the first period carried over into the second quarter as no team led by more than two goals in the first half. 60 minutes of play wasn't enough for either team to score the deciding goal, bring the Red Storm to its first overtime game of the season.
Both teams were unsuccessful on their first attempts of the overtime period. In St. John's next possession, Providence took advantage of a Red Storm turnover which led to Matt Grillo finding the back of the net to clinch the 8-7 victory.
Despite the loss, St. John's outshot the Friars, 43-41, and scooped up a total of 42 groundballs, compared to Providence's 21.
The Red Storm will look to avenge Saturday's loss on Tuesday as the Johnnies host local rival, Stony Brook, at DaSilva Memorial Field at 3 p.m.
