St. John’s looks to win its final non-conference game of the season at DaSilva Memorial Field
QUEENS, N.Y. – After losing its first BIG EAST game of the season on Saturday, March 30, to Providence in overtime, 8-7, the St. John's lacrosse team returns to action at DaSilva Memorial Field on Tuesday to host the Stony Brook Seawolves in its final non-conference showdown of the season.
Coverage of Tuesday's game will be broadcast live on ESPN3 with Mike Watts on the call from Queens.
The contest will mark the fourth-consecutive home game for the Johnnies, as the Red Storm look to win its third home contest and improve to 5-5 this season.
The St. John's lacrosse team dropped its first BIG EAST contest of the season on Saturday, falling to the Providence Friars, 8-7, at DaSilva Memorial Field.
Colin Duffy led the Johnnies (4-5) offensively, finishing with two goals and one assist. Jonathan Huber (two goals) and Mike Madsen each finished with two points. Declan Swartwood and Joe Madsen each tallied a goal, while Chris Buscemi recorded one assist.
Freshman goalkeeper Brody Agres kept the Red Storm in the game throughout the entire contest, recording 13 saves in the loss against Providence.
Colin Bosak and Joseph Fitzpatrick split the duties at the X for St. John's, winning 11 of the 18 total attempts. Fitzpatrick finished 7-of-11 while Bosak won four of his eight faceoff tries for the Red Storm.
Tuesday's showdown will mark the 10th game of the season for the Seawolves, and their fourth game on the road. Stony Brook heads into Tuesday's contest having won its last two conference games. On March 23, the Seawolves hosted UMBC and used a seven-goal outburst in the fourth quater to pull away with the victory, 14-7. On March 29, Stony Brook welcomed Binghamton and crushed the Bearcats, 13-6. Two of the Seawolves' four losses have been decided by a single goal.
Stony Brook is led in scoring by junior attackman Tom Haun with 23 goals and eight assists while Brendan Kearns has 13 goals. Sophomores Jack Walsh and Mike McCannell are the top two facilitators for the Seawolves with 13 and 11 assists, respectively. Junior goalkeeper Michael Bollinger has a 10.34 goals against average with 104 saves and a .531 save percentage in 532 minutes of action this season.
Jim Nagle is currently in his eighth season as head coach of the Stony Brook men's lacrosse program. Through his first seven seasons as head coach, Nagle has tallied over 50 victories, two America East Championships and seven appearances in the America East Championships as the Seawolves have never missed the conference post season since joining the league.
Nagle led Stony Brook to its fifth America East regular season title in program history in 2018 as the Seawolves tallied a 5-1 league record for the third time in four years.
Tuesday's contest will mark the 12th overall meeting and the 11th-consecutive season St. John's and Stony Brook will square off in the regular season.
The Seawolves hold a 7-4 lead in the series history. In the last showdown between the two programs, St. John's fell, 8-6, to Stony Brook in a defensive battle against the rain and under the lights, at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.
The last time the Red Storm defeated the Seawolves was on Feb. 14, 2015. The Johnnies capped off a thrilling 13-8 come-from-behind victory over Stony Brook for their first win of the season at DaSilva Memorial Field.
