Joe Madsen’s game-tying attempt in the closing seconds rattled off the crossbar and post
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's lacrosse team dropped its second-straight contest in dramatic fashion on Tuesday, falling to the Stony Brook Seawolves, 12-11, at DaSilva Memorial Field.
Joe Madsen led the Red Storm (4-6) offensively, finishing with four goals and one assist.
Seven other Johnnies tallied a goal in the losing effort, including freshman midfielder Matt Duncan and junior defenseman Pat Smyth, both recording their first goal in a Red Storm uniform.
Freshman goalkeeper Brody Agres kept the Red Storm in the game yet again, recording 14 saves in the loss against Stony Brook.
Colin Bosak and Joseph Fitzpatrick split the duties at the X for St. John's, winning 13 of the 26 total attempts. Bosak finished 9-of-15 while Fitzpatrick won four of his faceoff tries for the Red Storm.
Both teams traded early goals to start the game. After Stony Brook's Mike McCannell scored the first goal of the contest at the 13:26 mark, Colin Duffy responded with a goal of his own two minutes later. The Seawolves added two more goals and held a 3-1 lead with eight minutes left in the opening quarter. The Johnnies retaliated with four unanswered to close out the first period with a 5-3 lead.
After giving up four goals to close out the first quarter, Connor Grippe, Ryland Rees and Chris Pickel, Jr. responded with three-straight goals for Stony Brook, reclaiming the lead at 6-5 mid-way into the second. Joe Madsen would take control of the game, finishing the first half with two of the Red Storm's three-consecutive goals to head into the break with an 8-6 advantage.
The Red Storm and the Seawolves began the second half each trading two goals. After Stony Brook's Owen Daly and Pickel Jr. tied the game at eight goals apiece, Jonathan Huber scored his lone of the contest, followed by Smyth's first-career goal. Justin Pugal closed the third quarter with a rocket that went past Agres to draw his team within one goal at 10-9.
The Seawolves caught fire to start the fourth quarter, scoring three unanswered goals to regain the lead at 12-10, with 6:02 left to play. Joe Madsen scored a clutch goal to cut the deficit to one, maneuvering from the left side of the net to fire a shot past Seawolves goalkeeper Michael Bolliner, with 5:39 left to play.
St. John's was in striking distance of tying the game at 12 in the last five minutes of regulation and had two incredible chances in the final seconds of the game. With five seconds remaining on the clock, Mike Madsen held the ball in his crosse and fired a shot towards Bollinger as he was pushed near the crease. The officials awarded a push with three seconds left on Madsen's shot which came within inches of crossing the goal line.
In St. John's last play of the game, Joe Madsen ran towards the net and fired a laser as the time expired. The shot had beaten Bollinger but had ricocheted off the crossbar and off the left post, missing his second-straight attempt within inches.
Despite the loss, St. John's outshot the Friars, 48-38, and only turned the ball over six times, compared to Providence's 10 turnovers.
The Red Storm will look to avenge Tuesday's loss on Saturday as the Johnnies venture to Milwaukee, to battle BIG EAST foe, Marquette, at 1 p.m. ET
