The Red Storm run ruled the Hoyas in an afternoon doubleheader, moving to 4-1 in conference play
Game One
The Red Storm topped the Hoyas, 12-4, in six innings on a walk-off single by Natalie Giroux.
Following a Marissa Rizzi solo homer in the top of the sixth, the Johnnies strung together three-straight singles, including an RBI base knock by Laura Delgado, before Giroux forced the run rule on a hit to left-center.
Senior Madison Morris continued to fool her opponents, striking out seven batters through the first three innings and fanning ten in her shortened complete game.
All of St. John's starters crossed the plate at least once for the Red Storm in the opening game of the weekend slate.
After a pair of scoreless innings, Georgetown (9-24, 2-3 BIG EAST) jumped out to a three-run lead after back-to-back homers in the third inning.
St. John's (15-15, 4-1 BIG EAST) responded in the home half on a Gretchen Bowie two-run shot to slash the Hoyas' lead to one, 3-2. Three batters later, Kaitlin Mattera tied the game at three on a sacrifice fly to bring Rizzi around to score.
Following another strong inning of work from Morris, the Johnnies took their first lead of the contest, 4-3, in the fourth inning when Laura Delgado scored on a fielder's choice by pinch hitter Kamryn Tiumalu.
After loading the bases for Peyton Cody, the freshman cleared them on a double to left-center to extend the advantage to four, 7-3. With the bases loaded, the Mission Viejo, Calif., native has recorded five hits in seven tries with 13 RBIs.
Two batters later, Christina Melendez drove a two-run double down the third base line to give the Red Storm a commanding six-run lead, 9-3.
Following a solo shot by Georgetown's shortstop Savannah Jones in the fifth inning to cut the Johnnies' advantage to five, 9-4, St. John's plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth to rule run the Hoyas, 12-4.
Game 2
The Red Storm pushed across runs in the final five innings to take Georgetown down, 10-2, in six frames.
For the third time this season, Laura Delgado recorded the game-winning hit for the Johnnies. Six days after walking off against Providence, the junior utility player did the same against the Hoyas. After Cody lined a double to left and scored on a wild pitch to take a 9-2 lead, Delgado roped an RBI single to left-center, bringing Mattera around to score and run-ruling Georgetown for the second-straight contest. The Hesperia, Calif., native added two hits and two runs to her credit.
Mattera started the way she finished, scoring the Johnnies' first run on a ball put into play by Delgado. One of the Hoyas' five errors knocked the Red Storm's catcher across in the second inning to take a one-run advantage.
In the home half of the third frame, Rizzi rocked her second solo home run of the afternoon and 10th of the season to extend the Johnnies' lead, 2-0.
After three scoreless innings of work for freshman Angela Saric, Georgetown tagged the right-hander with two runs in the fourth to tie the game. From that point forward, the Oakland, N.J., native retired seven of the next nine batters before the Red Storm closed out the game. Saric recorded a career-high six strikeouts while allowing just three hits in her 11th start of the season.
The Red Storm broke the game open in the home half of the fourth. Giroux ripped an RBI double to the left-center, scoring Delgado and giving the Red Storm a 3-2 lead. After the Johnnies loaded the bases, Giroux bolted home on a wild pitch to go up, 4-2. After a Rizzi walk loaded the bases again, Cody knocked in another run on a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Amelia Ditolvo and pushing the lead to three, 5-2.
The Johnnies' advantage expanded to 6-2 in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Meisha Murray. After a flurry of miscues by Georgetown's infielders on a Bowie sacrifice bunt, Ditolvo and Murray scored to take an 8-2 advantage.
In the final frame, St. John's tagged the Hoyas' with its final two runs to secure the team's fourth conference win of the season.
The Red Storm looks for its first conference sweep of the season against Georgetown when the teams return to Red Storm Field on Sunday. First pitch is slated for noon and will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
