Cal State Northridge Pushes Past St. John’s, 11-9

The two teams traded rallies throughout the afternoon in Southern California
St. John's (2-7) and CSUN (7-6) traded runs in nine-straight half innings between the bottom of the third and the bottom of the seventh. The Red Storm pulled within one run on four separate occasions during that stretch, but never led or tied after CSUN got on the board first in the bottom of the third.
The Johnnies outhit the Matadors, 14-9, but five St. John's errors helped push across three unearned runs for CSUN. The Red Storm's 14 hits were a season high, as were the team's nine runs.
Wyatt Mascarella was one of six Johnnies to record multiple hits on the afternoon, going 2-for-3 with four RBIs and a walk. The senior backstop drove in the Red Storm's first run of the day on a sac fly in the fourth before launching a three-run homer in the seventh.
Freshman Colin Wetterau logged his second multi-hit game in as many opportunities, going 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs.
Ryan Markey and Josh Greene picked up two hits apiece after starting the game on the bench, as the pair entered as pinch hitters in the fifth and immediately helped spark a St. John's rally. Markey, a redshirt junior, now has three extra-base hits in five appearances this year.
Carson Bartels logged two base knocks for his first multi-hit game as a Johnnie, while Peter Abinanti smacked two singles and drove in a run for the second consecutive day.
Mike Antico and Brandon Bossard also singled for St. John's. Antico scored twice on the afternoon after entering the game as a pinch runner in the sixth inning.
After Ian Murphy kept them without a hit for the first two frames in his first collegiate start, the Matadors rallied with two outs in the third to take a 2-0 lead. Robert Bullard singled through the right side with a full count before Brandon Bohning homered to left and broke the scoreless deadlock.
The Red Storm cut into the CSUN lead in the following frame, as Brandon Miller drew a leadoff walk before advancing to second on a balk. After moving to third on a Bossard single through the left side, Miller came home on a Mascarella sac fly to center and pulled the Red Storm within one, 2-1, after three and a half.
The Matadors responded by tacking on two unearned runs in the fourth, as a pair of fielding errors helped CSUN bump its lead to three, 4-1, heading into the fifth.
St. John's wasted no time answering, trimming its deficit back to one with two runs in the top of the fifth on a pinch-hit, two-RBI double off the bat of Markey. Bartels and Greene, who also pinch hit, singled to set up the two-run extra-base knock.
A two-RBI single in the home half of the frame ballooned St. John's deficit back to three, 6-3, but the Johnnies responded in the sixth to trim the CSUN advantage down to a single run once again. With runners on the corners and one out, Wetterau singled to right to bring home the inning's first run. A few batters later, Abinanti drew a bases-loaded walk to make it a 6-5 ball game.
The scoring trend continued in the bottom of the sixth, as Andrew Lucas hit a two-run triple to right center before scoring on a wild pitch to give CSUN its largest lead of the day, 9-5, heading into the seventh.
The Red Storm threatened early in the top of the seventh, as Markey and Antico led off the top of the inning with back-to-back base knocks. Two batters later, Mascarella brought them all home with his first round-tripper of the year, clawing the Red Storm back within one, 9-8, at the stretch.
St. John's ended the streak with a scoreless top of the eight before CSUN tacked on two insurances tallied in the home half. The Johnnies rallied with two outs in the ninth to climb within two, 11-9, but that was as close as the Red Storm would get.
The Red Storm will return to action on Friday, beginning a three-game set at No. 24 UC Irvine. First pitch is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET at Cicerone Field.
