Johnnies drop third game in last 18 tries
The Musketeers (13-21, 4-0 BIG EAST) stayed undefeated in conference play by scoring 11 runs in just three frames, tallying a single run in the fifth before scoring four in the sixth and six in the eighth.
Joe LaSorsa, who entered the game having earned a win in four consecutive appearances, was tagged with five unearned runs in a no-decision. The junior has allowed just one earned run in his last 39.2 innings pitched dating back to March 8 and now sports a 1.08 ERA on the season.
Carson Bartels led the way with his third three-hit game of the year, going 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. The junior third baseman is now tied for the team lead in multi-hit games with nine on the season.
Ryan Markey doubled twice and drove in two runs while Mitchell Henshaw logged a two-run single and sac fly for his second effort of the year with three or more RBIs.
Mike Antico, Wyatt Mascarella, Brandon Bossard and Sean McGeehan all saw their lone hits of the afternoon go for extra-bases. McGeehan hit his team-leading fifth home run of the year to lead off the bottom of the eighth.
After LaSorsa stranded a runner at third in the top of the first, the Red Storm (18-12, 2-2 BIG EAST) used three hits to push across two runs in the home half of inning. Bartels singled with one out before moving to third two batters later on a Markey double. Next up was Henshaw, who dropped a two-out, two-run single between the second baseman and right fielder, putting the Johnnies ahead, 2-0, after one.
Following another scoreless frame from LaSorsa in the top of the second, the Johnnies added another run in the home half of the inning. With Bossard on second after a two-out double, Antico ripped a triple into the right-field corner, scoring Bossard and extending the Red Storm lead to three.
Xavier scored its first run of the afternoon in the top of the fifth, but the Johnnies answered with a tally of their own in the ensuing frame. After reaching on a fielder's choice, Mascarella came around to score on a Markey double off the left field wall, putting the Red Storm on top by a score of 4-1 after five.
The Musketeers erased that St. John's advantage with four runs, all unearned, in the top of the sixth. A bases-clearing double by pinch-hitter Luke Stephenson scored three of those runs before Conor Grammes added an RBI single. All four runs came with two outs after the leadoff batter reached on a fielding error.
Down 5-4 at the stretch, St. John's climbed back ahead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh. Bartels led off the frame with a single to center before a Mascarella ground-rule double gave the Johnnies runners on second and third with no outs. Next up was Markey, who pushed a run-scoring grounder to the right side before Henshaw smacked a sac fly to deep center, putting the Red Storm on top, 6-5.
The St. John's lead quickly evaporated in the eighth, as Xavier used two home runs, including a Matt Warkentin grand slam, to score six times in the frame and move ahead by five, 11-6, after seven and a half.
McGeehan homered to lead off the bottom of the eighth before the Johnnies tacked on another run later in the frame, trimming the deficit to three, 11-8, heading into the ninth. Bossard and Josh Greene drew consecutive walks before Greene eventually scored on a Bartels grounder to the right side.
After leaving a runner on base in the eighth, St. John's went down in order in the ninth, securing the series-opening victory for Xavier.
The Red Storm and Musketeers will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium, as the two teams are scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
