Ryan Hogan lifts game-winning sac fly in the bottom of the 14th
The Red Storm (19-12, 3-2 BIG EAST) erased a late three-run deficit for the second time in its last three games, scoring three in the eighth to eventually force extras. On Wednesday, the Red Storm scored three in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game against LIU Brooklyn.
The contest, which lasted four hours and 37 minutes, featured no scoring from the eighth inning until the game-winner in the 14th. From the last out of the sixth until the second batter of the 13th, Ian Murphy and Gavin Hollowell combined to retire 20-straight Xavier batters. Murphy delivered 2.1 innings of one hit work, while Hollowell threw a career-high 4.2 frames while allowing just one runner to reach base on a single. Turner French tossed 1.1 scoreless innings to pick up his first win of the year.
Sean Mooney struck out seven in four innings of work, registering his sixth no-decision of the year. The junior pulled into a tie for fifth place on the Johnnies' all-time strikeouts list with former Big Leaguer Anthony Varvaro (249).
Mike Antico and Wyatt Mascarella tallied three hits and drove in two runs apiece against Xavier (13-22). Ryan Markey, Mitchell Henshaw and Brandon Bossard added two knocks each. Henshaw and Bossard also drove in runs for the Johnnies.
Hogan, Sean McGeehan and Carson Bartels all singled and drove in a run on the long afternoon.
After Mooney struck out the side in order in the top of the first, Antico led off the home half with a solo shot to right center, quickly giving the Red Storm a 1-0 lead.
Two innings later, the Red Storm used another solo homer, this time off the bat of Bossard, to extend its lead to 2-0.
The afternoon's third round tripper tied the game at two in the top of the fourth, as Luke Franzoni belted a ball off the scoreboard in left center.
Following a scoreless fourth for St. John's, Xavier jumped ahead, 5-2, with a three-run effort in the top of the fifth. The Red Storm quickly answered in the home half, as Bossard reached on an error, Antico singled and Bartels walked to load the bases with no outs. Next up was Mascarella, who laced a two-run single into center to trim the deficit to one. After Markey struck out for the inning's first out, Henshaw lifted a sac fly to right, scoring Bartels and knotting the score at five.
Xavier (13-22, 4-1 BIG EAST) continued the scoring trend in the top of the sixth, plating three runs to move ahead 8-5 after five and a half.
After Murphy kept the Musketeers off the board with a pair of 1-2-3 frames in the seventh and eighth innings, the Red Storm struck for three runs to tie the game in the home half of the eighth. With runners on second and third following a Henshaw double and a Hogan single to lead off the frame, McGeehan dropped a single into right center to score Henshaw and move Hogan to third. With runners now on first and second and the deficit down to two, Peter Abinanti dropped a sac bunt that the pitcher mishandled, allowing the redshirt junior to reach first and load the bases for Bossard. Bossard struck out, but Antico was hit by a pitch in the following at-bat to pull the Johnnies within one, 8-7. With the bases still loaded and one out, Bartels executed a near-perfect squeeze play, scoring McGeehan from third and tying the game at eight heading into the ninth.
The bats soon went dead and neither team threatened until the bottom of the 14th. After Mascarella led off the frame with a groundout to third, Markey singled through the right side. With the hit-and-run on, Xavier threw a first-pitch pitchout to try and catch Markey going for second. Instead Henshaw extended and pushed a single through the right side, moving Markey to third and setting up Hogan's game-winning sac fly.
The Red Storm and the Musketeers will play the finale of their three-game set tomorrow at 12 p.m. The contest will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
