Red Storm moves to 3-4 in BIG EAST play
After the first six innings of Thursday's series opener between St. John's and Villanova yielded no runs for either side, the Wildcats picked up a pair of big hits in the seventh and eighth frames to plate five runs en route to a 5-1 victory over the Red Storm at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
Joe LaSorsa, who had allowed just one unearned run in his last 39.2 innings entering Thursday's game, took a perfect game into the fifth inning and kept Villanova (10-24, 3-4 BIG EAST) off the board through six. The Iona Prep product suffered his third loss of the season.
Villanova starter Nick Lorusso threw six shutouts frames en route to his first victory of the campaign.
Sean McGeehan reached base in all four of his at-bats, going 3-for-3 with a walk. The Red Storm tallied eight hits on the afternoon compared to just five for Villanova.
Ryan Hogan ripped a couple of base knocks and drove in the lone run of the game for St. John's (20-14, 3-4 BIG EAST) in the bottom of the ninth. Mike Antico, Carson Bartels and Mitchell Henshaw also tallied hits for the Red Storm.
Wyatt Mascarella failed to get on base in four attempts, snapping a streak of 26 consecutive games reaching base for the senior backstop.
St. John's threatened in the bottom of the third, as McGeehan and Hogan singled to give St. John's a pair of runners with nobody gone in the frame. The Red Storm failed to bring home either runner; however, preserving the scoreless tie.
The Red Storm threatened again in the bottom of the sixth, as Antico led off the inning with a bunt single before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt. That was as far as the junior would get, as the next two batters flew out to close the frame.
Villanova plated its first runs of the afternoon in the top of the seventh, as the team's third hit of the day was a three-run homer to put the Wildcats on the board. The visitors added two more in the top of the eighth to make it five-run game. With a runner on first and one out, Chris Rotondo belted an RBI triple to right center before coming home to score on a groundout to third in the following at-bat.
St. John's made a bit of two-out rally in the ninth before ultimately coming up short. Miller and McGeehan walked to put runners on before Hogan laced a run-scoring single through the left side, giving the Red Storm its lone run of the afternoon.
The Wildcats and the Red Storm will resume their series tomorrow at New York Institute of Technology. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. and an audio broadcast will be available at RedStormSports.com
