The Red Storm and the Wildcats will close out their series tomorrow afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium. Originally scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch, Saturday's contest will now start at 3 p.m. due to a forecast calling for early rain.
Mike Antico led the way for the Johnnies (21-14, 4-4 BIG EAST) with the best offensive performance by a St. John's player in nearly a decade. The junior outfielder went 4-for-4 with three home runs, a double and seven RBIs. He also walked twice to reach base in all six of his plate appearances.
Antico became the first St. John's player since Jeremy Baltz in 2010 to hit three or more home runs and record seven RBIs in a single game. Baltz last accomplished the feat on May 14, 2010, blasting four home runs and logging seven RBIs at Louisville.
Ryan Markey also left the yard for St. John's, belting his first career grand slam in the first inning. Markey scored three times on the afternoon, going 2-for-3 with a pair of walks.
Ryan Hogan went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and four runs scored while Carson Bartels tallied three hits to go along with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Brandon Miller and Brandon Bossard also recorded multi-hit games for St. John's, which tallied 18 knocks on the afternoon. Bossard with 2-for-5 with three runs scored while Miller went 2-for-4, scored twice and drove in a run.
Villanova scored six runs in the first two innings before being shut out the rest of the way. Joe Kelly picked up the win for the Red Storm, allowing just three hits and walking one over five shutout innings. Matt Semon threw a scoreless ninth to close the contest.
Villanova kicked off the scoring with back-to-back solo shots in the top of the first. The Red Storm responded authoritatively in the home half of the frame, As Antico led things off with a solo shot before three straight Johnnies reached base to set up a Markey grand slam, giving the Red Storm five runs before recording its first out. Bartels and Hogan would add run-scoring hits before the inning was over, giving the Johnnies a 7-2 lead heading into the second.
The Wildcats scored four times in the top of the second, pulling within one after an inning and a half.
Bartels laced an RBI single to score Antico in the bottom of the third before the Johnnies tacked on five runs in the fourth to blow the game open. Hogan smacked a two-RBI double down the left field line and Antico ripped a three-run shot to right, giving the Red Storm a 13-6 advantage after four.
The Johnnies were not done yet, pouring on eight more runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 21-6 lead. Three of those runs came on bases-loaded walks while Hogan and Bartels added RBI singles and Miller lifted a two-run double to right center.
Antico's third homer of the day, this time of the two-run variety, made it 23-6 after six.
The Red Storm added its final run of the afternoon in the bottom of the seventh, as Colin Wetterau doubled to lead off the frame before advancing to third on a wild pitch and scoring on an Andrew DuPont grounder to second.
St. John's threatened in the eighth as well, leaving runners on the corners.
