St. John’s Falls at Marquette, 12-8

A scoreless second quarter haunts the Johnnies, falling to 0-2 in BIG EAST play
MILWAUKEE – The St. John's lacrosse team dropped its second BIG EAST contest of the season on Saturday, falling to the Marquette Golden Eagles, 12-8, at Marquette's Valley Fields.
Colin Duffy led the Red Storm (4-7, 0-2 BIG EAST) offensively, finishing with five goals. Joe Madsen scored two goals and dished out an assist in the losing effort.
Marquette started the game with two quick goals, scored by redshirt senior Tanner Thomson. Duffy would score two of his five goals in the opening period to lead a four-goal scoring goal to close out the first quarter. Swartwood and Joe Madsen scored to give the Red Storm a 4-2 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Golden Eagles controlled the momentum the entire second period, holding St. John's without a goal throughout the entire 15 minutes of play. The last time the Red Storm was held scoreless in a quarter was on April 14, 2018, when the Johnnies failed to score in the second period in their 1
Marquette went on to score six goals in the second quarter, two of them each coming from senior attackman John Wagner and graduate midfielder Andrew Romagnoli. Midfielders Luke Anderson and Jack Zerrillo scored their lone goals for Marquette in the second to give the Golden Eagles an 8-4 lead at the break.
Marquette started the second half picking up where they left off in the first half. The Golden Eagles scored the first two goals of the third quarter, making it eight unanswered goals. Joe Madsen put an end to the scoreless with 3:46 left to play in the third quarter.
With Marquette sustaining an 11-5 lead at the start of the fourth quarter, both teams played physical defense without allowing a goal to be scored in over nine minutes. Duffy scored the last three of his five goals in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to four goals. Tanner Thomson scored his fourth goal of the contest, leading his team to its sixth victory of the season.
The Red Storm were outshot for only the fourth time this season, firing 38 shots compared to Marquette's 43.
Despite the loss, St. John's won the turnover margin, causing eight of Marquette's 18 turnovers.
Freshman goalkeeper Brody Agres recorded 13 saves in 60 minutes of action.
Colin Bosak and Joseph Fitzpatrick split the duties at the X for St. John's, winning only seven of the 22 total attempts. Bosak won six of his 17 faceoff tries for the Red Storm.
The Red Storm will look to avenge Saturday's loss at home next Saturday, April 13, as the Johnnies host No. 13/10 Denver on Senior Day at DaSilva Memorial Field at 1 p.m.
