St. John’s Drops Road Contest to No. 20 Villanova, 16-5

The Red Storm loses its fourth BIG EAST contest of the season, fall to 4-9 on the year
VILLANOVA, Pa. – The St. John's lacrosse team dropped its third contest against a ranked opponent on Saturday, losing to BIG EAST rival No. 20 Villanova, 16-5, at Villanova Stadium.
Joe Madsen led all St. John's players with two goals this afternoon. Colin Duffy, Mike Madsen, and Ryan Schaeffer each added a tally in the losing effort.
The Red Storm failed to score the first goal of the contest for only the fifth time this season. Villanova's Keegan Khan scored on the first possession of the game at the 14:13 mark in the opening quarter to give his team the early lead.
The Wildcats built a comfortable cushion, ending the first quarter with a 6-1 advantage. Corey McManus scored twice in the period while the remaining goals were scored by four different Villanova players.
Duffy put an end to the drought late in the first, firing a shot past Wildcats' netminder Will Vitton with 3:20 left on the clock.
Villanova's success on offense continued in the second quarter. The Johnnies quickly found themselves down 10-1 after the Wildcats tallied four unanswered goals to start the period. Joe Madsen scored the Johnnies' lone goal of the period with two minutes left in the half.
Both teams started the second half trading two goals apiece. After Connor Kirst's tally opened the half, Mike Madsen and Schaeffer recorded their lone goals of the contest to cut the deficit to 11-4. Villanova's Patrick Daly ended the third quarter with a tally to give the Wildcats a 12-4 lead heading into the final period.
Villanova's explosive offense continued to do damage in the fourth quarter as they added three more tallies to increase its lead to 10 goals. Joe Madsen scored his second goal of the game with 4:41 left to play in the fourth period. Freshman Chet Comizio scored the final goal of the game, ensuring the 16-5 victory for the Wildcats.
Freshman goalkeeper Brody Agres recorded 11 saves and picked up two groundballs in the loss.
Joseph Fitzpatrick and Colin Bosak split the duties at the X for the Red Storm, winning a total of seven faceoffs.
Eight different Wildcats found the back of the net, including sophomore attackman Corey McManus who led all scorers with four goals. Patrick Daly and Connor Kirst each added three goals.
St. John's will play its final BIG EAST contest of the season next Saturday, April 27, as the Johnnies will square off with Georgetown in the nation's capital at 1 p.m.
