St. John’s looks to end the regular season with its first conference win on Saturday
After losing its fourth conference game of the season on April 20 to No. 20 Villanova, 16-5, the St. John's lacrosse team returns to action for the final time this Saturday to take on BIG EAST rival No. 19/17 Georgetown at noon in the nation's capital.
Coverage of Saturday's game will be broadcasted nation-wide on CBS Sports Network.
The Johnnies (4-9, 0-4 BIG EAST) are still in search of their first conference win of the season after losing their third conference game last weekend. A victory on Saturday will mark the Red Storm's first BIG EAST win since April 30, 2016, and will improve St. John's to 5-8 this season.
Joe Madsen led all St. John's players with two goals this afternoon. Colin Duffy, Mike Madsen, and Ryan Schaeffer each added a tally in the losing effort.
Freshman goalkeeper Brody Agres recorded 11 saves and picked up two groundballs in the loss. Joseph Fitzpatrick and Colin Bosak split the duties at the X for the Red Storm, winning a total of seven faceoffs.
Saturday's showdown will mark the 15th game of the season for the Hoyas, and their eighth tilt at home. Georgetown heads into Saturday's matchup having won three of its last four games, including a 16-13 win over Villanova on April 14. The Hoyas lost its first two BIG EAST contests this season against Marquette and Denver before defeating Providence on April 6, 17-15.
Georgetown is led in scoring by junior attackman Jake Carraway with 46 goals and 26 assists while senior Daniel Bucaro has 45 goals. Carraway, Bucaro and sophomore Lucas Wittenberg are the top facilitators for Georgetown, combining for 71 assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Owen McElroy has posted an 11.45 goals against average with 173 saves and a .524 save percentage in 738 minutes of action this season.
Georgetown Head Coach Kevin Warne took over the program in the summer of 2012. Named the 2015 BIG EAST Coach of the Year, he led the Hoyas to their first 10-win season since 2007 and a berth in the BIG EAST Championship game before falling to eventual National Champion, Denver.
During his tenure on the Hilltop, Warne has coached 14 players to All-BIG EAST honors, one BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and two USILA All-Americans. Four of his players have been selected to play in the prestigious North-South All-Star Game, while two have gone on to play professionally.
Warne has amassed 22 wins during his time on the Hilltop, the second most in program history for a head coach in his first four years on the sidelines.
Saturday's contest will mark the 19th overall meeting between the two programs. The Hoyas have won the last two contests against the Red Storm. In the last showdown between the two programs, St. John's fell to the Hoyas at DaSilva Memorial Field, 11-6, on April 28, 2018.
A victory would mark the second win over Georgetown in four years and the first conference victory since the Johnnies defeated the Hoyas at DaSilva Memorial Field, 8-5, in 2016.
