Red Storm has won 20 of its last 25 entering the weekend
After hosting consecutive weekend series at home, the St. John's baseball team will hit the road for a three-game set against Georgetown beginning on Friday at Shirley Povich Field. All three contests will be streamed live on GUHoyas.com
The Red Storm (24-13) heads to D.C. having won 20 of its last 25 contests after owning Stony Brook, 6-3, at home on Tuesday afternoon. Four Johnnies recorded multi-hit games, led by a 3-for-4 outing from Ryan Hogan. Carson Bartels went 2-for-4 with a run scored, marking his third-straight game with at least two hits. Over his last 20 games, Bartels is hitting .381 with 18 RBIs and is a perfect 5-for-5 on stolen base attempts.
Mike Antico added two base knocks on Tuesday against the Seawolves, continuing a red-hot stretch at the plate for the junior outfielder. Over his last 20 games, Antico is hitting .422 with 20 RBIs, 11 extra-base hits and a team-best .675 slugging percentage. On Monday, Antico was named one of Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's National Players of the Week following his outstanding performance against Villanova on Friday in game two of the series. The Colts Neck, N.J., native went 4-for-4 with three home runs, a double, seven RBIs and a pair of walks, becoming the first St. John's player since Jeremy Baltz in 2010 to register three or more roundtrippers and knock in seven runs during a single outing. He was also named BIG EAST Player of the Week for his accomplishments.
On the bump, the Red Storm's bullpen played a pivotal role in last weekend's series victory at home against Villanova. In 11 innings of work, St. John's relievers did not allow a single run to cross the plate. On Friday in game two of the set, Joe Kelly delivered five shutout innings of three-hit ball to earn his third win of the season. The following afternoon, Gavin Hollowell struck out a career-high seven batters in a 3.1-inning save, including an escape act in the ninth that saw him exit unscathed after loading the bases with no outs.
Friday starter Joe LaSorsa is looking to bounce back from an outing that saw him surrender five earned runs in the series opener against Villanova. Prior to that, LaSorsa had allowed just one earned run since March 8 in a span of 39.2 innings. That lone earned run came in what was arguably the best outing of LaSorsa's career, a complete game four-hitter against Kansas that lasted just an hour and 55 minutes. Through games played on Wednesday, LaSorsa ranks 26th nationally with a 1.73 ERA. As a team, the Red Storm's 3.61 ERA ranks 31st in Division I.
The Red Storm will look to secure its second straight BIG EAST series win after dropping two of three to a conference foe for the first time since 2017 against Xavier earlier this month, snapping a streak of 12 consecutive series victories in league play. The last time St. John's and Georgetown met in the nation's capital, the Red Storm secured a series victory in thrilling fashion. After taking the Friday opener and losing on Saturday, the Johnnies trailed by four heading into the ninth inning of Sunday's rubber match. The Red Storm plated four runs in the frame to extend the action before scoring the eventual game-winning tally in the top of the 11th.
Overall, St. John's is 64-14 all-time against Georgetown in a series that dates back to 1984. The Johnnies have won eight of their last nine against the Hoyas, including a 5-2 win the opening game of last year's BIG EAST Baseball Championship.
Georgetown (13-27), enters the weekend after dropping a midweek contest to D.C. rival George Washington on Wednesday night in Bethesda. The Hoyas are 2-4 in BIG EAST play, taking two of three from Villanova after being swept to Xavier to begin conference action.
Sophomore Eddie McCabe is the lone Georgetown batter hitting above .300, checking in at .320 with 19 RBIs. Grad transfer Kyle Ruedisili is the team's leading power hitter, slugging .570 with team highs in doubles (14), home runs (7) and RBIs (23).
