Red Storm moves to 5-5 in conference play
BETHESDA, Md. (April 26, 2019) – Trailing 4-0 after five innings, the St. John's baseball team rallied to cut its deficit to one before ultimately falling short, 4-3, against Georgetown on Friday night at Shirley Povich Field.
Wyatt Mascarella led the way for the Red Storm offensively (23-15, 5-5 BIG EAST), launching a two-run shot to left in the top of the sixth. Sean McGeehan recorded the other RBI for St. John's with an infield single in the seventh.
Ryan Markey reached base three times, going 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Carson Bartels and Brandon Miller doubled on the evening for St. John's, which fell to .500 in BIG EAST play and dropped its third-straight conference series opener.
Joe LaSorsa was tagged with the loss despite allowing just one earned run in five innings of work. Sam Lara, Matt Semon and Ben Greenberg combined to toss three frame of scoreless, one-hit relief work, striking out six over that span.
Georgetown's Eddie McCabe led off the bottom of the second with a solo shot to left center, giving the Hoyas the first lead of the game.
The Hoyas bolstered their advantage with a three-spot in the bottom of the fifth. All three runs were unearned for LaSorsa, as Georgetown bumped its edge to four heading into the sixth.
In the ensuing frame, the Red Storm rallied with two outs to get on the board for the first time. Bartels doubled down the left field line to put a runner in scoring position before Mascarella lifted a two-run shot into the woods beyond the left field fence, bringing the Red Storm within two, 4-2, after five and half.
Following a scoreless frame from Lara in the bottom of the sixth, the Red Storm cut into the deficit again in the top of the seventh. Markey singled to lead off the frame and advanced to second on a fielding error by the center fielder, giving St. John's a runner in scoring position with no outs. After moving to third on a Mitchell Henshaw grounder, Markey came home to score on a McGeehan infield single, bringing the Red Storm within one, 4-3, at the seventh inning stretch.
Mascarella and Henshaw sent balls to the warning track in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, but the Red Storm fell short of tying the contest.
The Johnnies and the Hoyas will resume their series tomorrow evening at Shirley Povich Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
