Red Storm comes up short despite surrendering only two hits
BETHESDA, Md. (April 27, 2019) – Despite allowing just two hits on the evening, the St. John's baseball team dropped its second straight decision to Georgetown on Saturday night, falling to the Hoyas, 2-1, at Shirley Povich Field.
Seven different St. John's players tallied hits on the game, but the Red Storm (23-16, 5-6 BIG EAST) struck out a season-high 16 times.
Only one of Georgetown's two runs was earned. Ian Murphy was tagged with the loss despite allowing one hit and striking out a career-high six batters in four innings of work. Turner French and Joe Kelly combined to allow just one hit in four frames of shutout ball. French fanned a pair while Kelly punched out three.
The Red Storm threatened in the top of the first, as Mike Antico laced a double off the wall in center before advancing to third on a groundout. Back-to-back punchouts from Morreale nullified the Johnnies' opportunity; however, holding the Red Storm without a run in the first.
Georgetown (15-27, 4-4 BIG EAST) wasted no time getting on the board, plating an unearned run in the home half of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. The Hoyas tacked on another run in the third with an RBI double from Ryan Weisenberg, bumping their advantage to a pair entering the fourth.
The Red Storm plated its first run of the evening in the fourth, as Ryan Markey led off the frame by singling to right and advancing to second on a fielding error by the right fielder. After taking third on a Brandon Miller groundout, Markey came home on a Mitchell Henshaw base knock to right, cutting the Georgetown lead to one, 2-1.
The Johnnies looked as if they might even the game in the top of the fifth, but Brandon Bossard, the potential game-tying run, was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second on a Wyatt Mascarella single.
The Red Storm put runners in scoring position in the sixth and eighth innings, but failed to bring the game-tying tally across on both occasions. Miller doubled with one out in the eighth, but was stranded.
The Johnnies and the Hoyas will wrap their series tomorrow afternoon at Shirley Povich Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
