Red Storm is swept in league for the first time since 2013
BETHESDA, Md. (April 28, 2019) – The St. John's baseball team dropped its third consecutive contest to Georgetown on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Hoyas, 4-1, at Shirley Povich Field.
Prior to this weekend, the Johnnies (23-17, 5-7 BIG EAST) had never been swept in the BIG EAST's current seven-team configuration and had never lost three-straight to Georgetown in more than 80 all-time meetings. The last BIG EAST opponent to sweep St. John's was Pittsburgh in 2013.
Mike Antico logged three of the Red Storm's six hits on the afternoon, including a pair of doubles. Brandon Bossard also tallied a two-bagger for the Johnnies while Wyatt Mascarella and Sean McGeehan added base knocks.
Georgetown (16-27, 5-4 BIG EAST) recorded the game's first hit and first run on the same play in the bottom of the third. After drawing a leadoff walk and advancing to second on a sac bunt, Alex Rosen came around to score on a Ryan Weisenberg base knock, giving the Hoyas a 1-0 lead.
The Johnnies threatened in the following frame, as Antico dropped a leadoff bunt single down the third-base line before advancing to second on a sac bunt from Carson Bartels. Mascarella then reached base on a walk before both runners advanced 90 feet on a deep fly ball to right center off the bat of Brandon Miller. The pair was stranded in scoring position; however, as Ryan Markey flew out to center to end the inning.
The Hoyas added onto their lead in the home half of the frame, as Kai Nelson launched a solo shot to left to make it 2-0 Georgetown after four.
The Red Storm threatened again in the top of the sixth, as Antico laced a one-out double before a Mascarella single two batters later gave St. John's runners on the corners with two gone. Next up was Miller, who belted another deep fly ball that barely stayed on the property, maintaining the two-run Georgetown lead after five and a half.
The Hoyas added onto their advantage in the seventh, using a Kyle Ruedisili solo homer and a Ryan M. Davis RBI double to move ahead 4-0 heading into the eighth.
St. John's finally got on the board in the top of the eighth, as Bossard and Antico blasted consecutive one-out doubles to left, slashing the Georgetown edge to three, 4-1. Mascarella and Miller walked to load the bases for Markey, but a fly ball to left ended the threat and kept the Hoya lead at three.
The Red Storm will return to action on Tuesday afternoon, playing host to Iona at 3 p.m. in Queens.
