Two 11th-inning singles lift Red Storm to extra-inning victory at Bulldog Park
After scoring two runs in the top of the ninth inning on Saturday afternoon only to see the game halted by darkness shortly thereafter, the St. John's baseball team completed its comeback on Sunday at Bulldog Park, using a lone run in the top of the 11th to defeat Butler, 5-4.
By bookending the three-game set with a pair of victories, St. John's has now won 12-straight BIG EAST series dating back April of 2017.
Joe Kelly, who pitched the ninth inning of yesterday's affair, allowed just one hit in two frames of shutout work this afternoon to improve to 2-0 on the year.
St. John's threatened in the top of the 10th, as Peter Abinanti drew a walk to lead off the frame. Josh Greene entered as a pinch runner, advancing to second on a wild pitch before taking third on a Sean McGeehan fly ball to deep center. With the go-ahead run 90 feet away and one out, the Johnnies failed to bring Greene home before the end of the frame, as Rudy Aguilar grounded out to third before a Mike Antico fly-out to left wrapped the inning.
After Kelly set the Bulldogs down in order in the home half of the 10th, the Red Storm used a two-out rally to score the game-winning run. Mitchell Henshaw singled to kick things off before Ryan Hogan wore a pitch to give St. John's runners on first and second. Next up was Greene, who singled to first before a throwing error by the first baseman allowed Henshaw to score from third and put the Red Storm ahead 5-4.
Butler attempted a two-out rally of its own in the home half, using a single and a hit-by-pitch to put runners on first and second with two gone in the frame. While St. John's managed to bring that runner home just an inning prior, Kelly worked a game-ending grounder to seal the series victory for the Red Storm.
St. John's will return to action on Tuesday afternoon, kicking off a five-game week with a 3 p.m. contest against Albany at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
