Red Storm closes the Atlanta Challenge with first win of Mike Hampton Era
ATLANTA (Feb. 16, 2020) – The St. John's baseball team picked up its first win of the season in convincing fashion, dominating No. 19 Georgia Tech on both sides of the ball in an 11-1 victory at Russ Chandler Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The win marked the first of the Mike Hampton Era and Red Storm's third straight against an ACC foe during regular season play since 2017. The Johnnies topped North Carolina in a midweek matchup during both the 2017 and 2018 campaigns.
The Red Storm has now claimed at least one win against a ranked opponent in each of the last six seasons.
Ian Murphy registered the best outing of his St. John's tenure, surrendering just two hits in five scoreless innings while walking three and striking out a career-high nine batters. The Swedesboro, N.J., native threw 97 pitches, 55 of which were for strikes.
Making just his second collegiate start, freshman Jake Lazzaro tallied his second three-hit game in as many tries, going 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI, a walk and a run scored.
Lazzaro was one of two Johnnies to tally three hits on the afternoon, as Mitchell Henshaw singled and scored three times
Justin Folz brought the power for the Red Storm, leaving the yard for the Johnnies' first home run of the season and ripping a double during a two-RBI performance.
Carson Bartels also logged a multi-hit outing, singling twice and driving in a run.
For the second time in as many days, Sean McGeehan needed just one hit to record two RBIs. Freshman David Glancy singled and drove in a run in his first collegiate start while Brandon Miller singled and scored twice.
Freshman Dominic Coombe gave up one hit in two innings of scoreless relief during his St. John's debut. The 6-foot-4 right-hander struck out one and walked one. Chris Stefl tossed a one-run eighth before Ethan Routzahn shut the door with two strikeouts in a 1-2-3 ninth.
After the Johnnies went down in order to open the contest, Murphy set the tone by striking out the side in the home half of the first.
In the following frame, the Red Storm loaded the bases with no outs, as Henshaw walked, Miller singled and McGeehan was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Henshaw then came home on a wild pitch to open the scoring before a throwing error by the pitcher allowed another run to cross the plate later in the inning.
Murphy fanned two in the bottom of the second before the Johnnies struck again in the top of the third. Peter Abinanti was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning before taking second on a Bartels grounder to the right side. Next up was Folz, who ripped an RBI double down the right field line to score Abinanti and make it a 3-0 ball game before Henshaw singled and advanced on a wild pitch to put a pair of Johnnies in scoring position. McGeehan then looped a ball into shallow right, scoring both runners and moving the Johnnies ahead by handful, 5-0.
After another two-K frame from Murphy in the third, Georgia Tech gifted a run to the Johnnies in the top of the fourth. Lazzaro drew a one-out walk before advancing to second on a passed ball and coming home to score on a two-base throwing error by the Yellow Jacket catcher, Jake Holland.
The Red Storm was kept off the board in the fifth and sixth innings before hanging up four more in the top of the seventh. Folz led off the frame with the first homer of his St. John's career, lining one over the wall in right for the Red Storm's seventh run of the day. After Henshaw singled and Miller was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with one out, Glancy and Lazzaro ripped back-to-back RBI singles, pushing the St. John's advantage to nine. The Red Storm added one more before the end of the inning, as a throwing error by the third baseman allowed Glancy to come home and extend the St. John's lead to double digits, 10-0.
After Georgia Tech ended the Red Storm's shutout bid in the eighth, the Red Storm responded with another run in the ninth. Lazzaro led off with a double before Bartels singled up the middle to bring him home for his second run of the afternoon.
The Red Storm returns to action on Friday, traveling to Berkeley, Calif., for a three-game set with the Golden Bears.
