St. John’s to Square Off with Local Foe LIU on Saturday

The Red Storm looks to win its first road tilt of the season this Saturday
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 21, 2020) – After capturing its first win of the 2020 campaign last Saturday over Hartford, 13-11, the Red Storm will take on LIU in its third road contest of the season on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 1 p.m., in Brookville, N.Y.
Coverage of Saturday's game at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium will be broadcasted live on NEC Front Row with Griffin Ward and Jason Glickman on the call.
St. John's will look to win its second-consecutive contest while LIU is vying for its first win since the university announced that its athletic programs will be unified into a single NCAA Division I program at the beginning of the 2019-20 season. A Sharks victory on Saturday will mark the program's first win in Division I lacrosse since the 1992 season.
Eric Wolf enters his third season as head coach of the LIU men's lacrosse team in 2020. Wolf became the ninth head coach in program history when he took over the reins of the LIU Post men's lacrosse team for the 2018 season. Wolf arrived at LIU Post with a wealth of experience, serving as an assistant coach at the Division I level from 2009-17.
The Northeast Conference men's lacrosse coaches selected Long Island University fifth in the west division in the 2020 preseason poll as announced by the league on Wednesday, Jan. 29. The Sharks find themselves picked behind Robert Morris, St. Joseph's, Mount St. Mary's, and NJIT.
The Sharks return over 90-percent of their scoring from 2019 to this season's squad. Seven point scorers left the program after 2019, with the highest point scorer coming in the form of Connor Farrell who tallied 14 points as a senior. The Sharks' top eight goal scorers return to the lineup (Snelders, Jake Gillis, Mike Kadnar, Alex Russell, Thomas Liantonio, Nick Grassa, Dan Foley, Dylan Villari) in 2020. That group combined for 204 goals and 301 total points last season, giving LIU one of the deepest attacks in the NEC this season.
Through the first three weeks of the season, freshman goalie Will Mark is sixth in the nation with 15.0 saves per game. Defender Ryan Blume and attackman Will Sneders also rank inside the top-10, with Blume ranking ninth in the nation with 2.5 caused turnovers per game and Snelders sitting 10th with 3.5 assists per game.
Saturday's contest will mark the first meeting between the two programs since the 1995 season. St. John's fell to LIU in that game, 15-7. The Sharks lead the all-time series 13-2 and come into Saturday's contest, winners of the last three meetings.
As a team, St. John's has been top of the conference in numerous statistical categories through the first three weeks of the season.
Through three games, the Red Storm have amassed a conference-leading 35 goals scored, 57 faceoff wins, 111 groundballs picked up, 137 shots fired, five man-up goals, .625 man-up scoring percentage.
Midfielder Mike Madsen has been on a tear in the first three games of his final collegiate season, firing a BIG EAST-high 13 goals through Saturday. Madsen's 4.33 goals per game, 14 shots per game and three man-up goals rank atop the conference while his 13 points rank second in the BIG EAST.
On Monday, the senior was named BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week following two career-best performances in the Red Storm's 13-12 overtime defeat at Stony Brook and 13-11 triumph over Hartford in Saturday's home opener.
