Mike Antico launces first home run of the season in the loss

LAS VEGAS (March 7, 2020) – The St. John's baseball team dropped the second game of its series with UNLV, falling to the Runnin' Rebels, 12-2, on Saturday afternoon at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.

Mike Antico launched his first homer of the 2020 campaign while Colin Wetterau and Peter Abinanti each added a pair of singles. Abinanti drove in the Red Storm's other run of the evening.

Carson Bartels belted a double and Justin Folz singled in the sixth straight loss for the Red Storm (3-8).

Not hitting leadoff for the first time this season, Antico put the Red Storm on the board in the top of the first with a one-out homer to center.

UNLV responded in the home half of the frame with two runs on two hits and three walks, as the Runnin' Rebels quickly erased the St. John's advantage.

After both teams sent just three batters to the plate in the second, UNLV added another run in the bottom of the third. Eric Bigani doubled with one out before advancing to third on a wild pitch and scoring on a sac fly, putting UNLV ahead 3-1 after three.

St. John's left runners on the corners in the top of the fifth before UNLV used a walk and four hits, including a three-run homer, to hang up five runs and extend its lead to seven, 8-1, after five.

The Red Storm cut into the UNLV lead with a two-out rally in the top of the seventh, as Bartels doubled and Jake Lazzaro walked to set up a run-scoring single off the bat of Abinanti, making it an 8-2 game after six and a half.

UNLV added two runs apiece in the seventh and eighth innings, bumping its lead to 10, 12-2, heading into the ninth.

St. John's loaded the bases in the final frame, but failed to bring any runners home.

The Red Storm and the Runnin' Rebels will wrap their series tomorrow afternoon, as the two teams will square off at Earl E. Wilson Stadium for a 4 p.m. ET start.
