David Glancy launches his second home run of the series
The St. John's baseball team used yet another solid pitching performance to take the Sunday finale from UMass Lowell, 3-1, and start the season off with a sweep at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
Brian Hendry impressed in his first career weekend start, allowing one run on four hits while striking out five over 4.2 innings of work. Geoff Mosseau walked four but surrendered no hits over 1.1 innings to pick up his second career win.
Joe Joe Rodriguez entered for St. John's in the bottom of the seventh and faced the minimum over the next two innings, allowing a lone single and striking out two over that stretch.
Ethan Routzahn fanned two in a no-hit ninth to pick up his second save of the weekend.
At the plate, David Glancy homered for the second time in as many days. After launching a three-run shot on Saturday, Glancy broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning with a two-run no-doubter to left. Glancy has now homered four times in five career games at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
Justin Folz's third extra-base hit of the weekend, an RBI double in the first, scored the Red Storm's other run. Glancy and Folz were two of eight different Johnnies to collect one hit in the series finale. Carson Bartels also went for extra bases, hitting the first triple of his St. John's career in the fifth.
The Red Storm struck first in the opening inning, as Jake Lazzaro drew a leadoff walk before scoring from first on a Folz two-bagger to the gap in left center.
UMass Lowell quickly evened the count in the top of the second, but was only able to plate one run after putting runners on the corners with nobody out.
St. John's appeared poised to break the deadlock in the third, as Paul Orbon and Lazzaro led off the frame with consecutive singles to put runners on the corners with no outs. UMass Lowell then worked a popout, caught Lazzaro stealing at second and forced a grounder to third, escaping the inning unscathed.
After Hendry faced just three batters in scoreless top of the fourth, UMass Lowell worked its way out of another jam in the home half of the frame. Following a diving catch in left for the inning's first out, three straight Johnnies reached to load the bases with one gone. St. John's, however, was unable to push a run across, as Ryan Hogan struck out looking and Orbon grounded out to end the inning.
With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Bartels smacked a triple to right center, giving the Red Storm another runner in scoring position. Needing only a fly ball to score Bartels, Glancy did one better, launching a two-run shot over the wall in left and giving the Johnnies a 3-1 lead.
UMass Lowell threatened again in the top of the sixth, drawing three straight walks to load the bases with two outs before Mosseau got Nick Marola swinging to end the frame without any damage.
Two River Hawks reached base over the final three innings, but neither advanced into scoring position, as the Johnnies secured the series sweep.
St. John's will return to action next weekend with four games. The Johnnies will host Sacred Heart for a doubleheader on Friday before heading to Stony Brook on Sunday for a twin bill with the Seawolves.
