Joe Madsen led the Johnnies with three goals
QUEENS, N.Y. (Mar. 6, 2021) – The St. John's lacrosse team fell to No. 11/10 Denver in its fourth game of the season on Saturday afternoon at DaSilva Memorial Field.
The Pioneers outscored the Johnnies, 20-6.
Graduate student Joe Madsen led the Red Storm with three goals and one assist.
Attackman Jonathan Huber registered two goals, while Ryan Schaeffer tacked on one more to round out the Red Storm's scoring.
Senior goalkeeper Gavin Catalano earned his first career start for St. John's, collecting a game-high 20 saves and one assist.
Denver junior Alex Simmons led both teams with five goals. Simmons also recorded four helpers. Senior Jack Hannah tallied a four goals for the Pioneers, as Lucas Colter collected a hat trick.
Madsen helped put the Johnnies on the board first, scoring a goal within the first two minutes of the game. Denver quickly responded with a 12-0 run. Simmons tallied four goals during that period while and Colter added on three more.
In the middle of the second quarter, Huber picked up a ground ball off Dylan Willis's shot and put it in the back of the net. A minute and change later, Catalano launched a pass down the field to Madsen, catching Denver's defense off guard and allowing Madsen to pick up his second goal of the day. The Pioneers closed out the half with a 14-3 lead.
Denver opened up the second half with three goals from Jack Hannah, Ethan Walker and A.J. Mercurio. In the final minutes of the third quarter, Willis connected with Madsen in the middle of the field, as Madsen fired it home to an empty net.
The Red Storm closed out the final quarter with two more goals from Schaffer and Huber, but it was enough as Denver added three more to secure its fifth victory of the season.
The Johnnies will travel to Philadelphia on Sunday, March 14, to square off against Villanova.
