Red Storm improves to 7-0 on the season, will travel to Western Carolina next weekend
The St. John's baseball team took both ends of a Sunday doubleheader from Sacred Heart, securing a four-game series sweep of the Pioneers and improving to 7-0 on the season.
The Red Storm has now started 7-0 or better in three of the last five seasons. The Johnnies began 2017 9-0 before rattling off eight straight wins to kick off the 2018 campaign. Both of those years resulted in NCAA Regional appearances.
Sacred Heart fell to 1-6 with the losses. Over four games, St. John's outscored the Pioneers by a margin of 47-9.
The Red Storm returns to action on Friday at Western Carolina for the first of a three-game set with the Catamounts.
Game One
St. John's scored four runs in each of its first three innings to defeat Sacred Heart, 12-1, in the opening game of Sunday's doubleheader. The first contest of the twin bill was scheduled for seven innings.
Sonny Fauci got the start and registered his first win of the season, allowing two hits and striking out four in 4.0 innings of one-run work.
Ben Adams made his first collegiate appearance in relief of Fauci in the fifth, surrendering no hits and only one walk while striking out two in as many innings. Tyler Roche pitched a scoreless seventh to seal the win.
David Williams, Mitchell Henshaw and Justin Folz all recorded three-run hits in the game. Williams added another RBI to push his RBI total to four for the contest.
Jake Lazzaro reached base in all three of his plate appearances and scored three times, going 2-for-2 with a walk, a triple and an RBI. Ryan Hogan also logged two hits and scored three times for the Red Storm.
David Glancy and Carson Bartels recorded doubles during the opening win.
In the first inning, three of the Red Storm's first four batters reached on balls to set up an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Williams. After another walk to load the bases, Henshaw smacked the first triple of his St. John's career into the gap in right center, scoring three runs and putting the Red Storm ahead 4-0 after one.
After Fauci fanned two in a scoreless top of the second, the Johnnies added on four more in the home half of the frame. Lazzaro laced a one-out triple to right center before scoring on a passed ball for the first run of the inning. Hogan and Folz then reached with singles before Williams brought them all in with his first Division I home run, a three-run shot to right.
In the third, Bartels doubled with one out before coming around to score on a Lazzaro single in the next at-bat. Following a Hogan base knock to put runners on first and second, Folz launched a ball over the right field bullpen, giving the Red Storm its second three-run shot in as many innings and extending the lead to 12-0 after three.
Sacred Heart added its lone run of the game in the top of the fourth before the Johnnies went scoreless over the final four frames. The Johnnies left runners on base in each of those innings, including a pair in scoring position in the bottom of the fourth.
Game Two
Anchored by a seven-run third inning, the Red Storm cruised to an 11-2 victory in game two on Sunday's doubleheader.
Lazzaro hit the first home run of his St. John's career, a third-inning grand slam. The redshirt freshman drove in a career-best five RBIs on the game.
Hogan reached base in all four of his game-two plate appearances, going 3-for-3 with a walk, a pair of doubles and an RBI.
Freshman infielder Chris Conniff had the best outing of his young career, going 3-for-3 with a triple, a walk and two runs scored.
Colin Wetterau drove in a pair of runs and scored twice while Williams and Brandon Miller each registered an RBI for the Red Storm.
Brian Hendry allowed two runs, neither of which was earned, to pick up his second career win. The redshirt sophomore scattered four hits and a pair of walks over 5.0 innings of work.
Nick Guzzi, Brandyn Cruz, Joe Joe Rodriguez and Ethan Routzahn each logged a scoreless inning of relief. The quartet combined to allow just one hit and struck out seventh. Routzahn, who logged two saves on opening weekend, struck out the side in the ninth.
After being held scoreless in the first, the Johnnies opened the scoring with a single run in the home half of the second. Miller laced a one-out double before moving to third on a wild pitch and scoring on a Wetterau RBI groundout to the right side.
Hendry worked another scoreless frame in the top of the third before the Red Storm exploded for seven runs in the home half of the inning. Two walks and a hit-by-pitch set the table for Williams, who ripped an RBI double down the left field line for the inning's first run. Next up were Miller and Wetterau, who both knocked in runs to make it 4-0 in favor of the Johnnies with two outs. McHugh then walked before Conniff singled to load the bases for Lazzaro, who promptly lifted a ball into the Sacred Heart bullpen for a grand slam, ballooning the Red Storm lead to 8-0 heading into the fourth.
The Pioneers got on the board with two unearned runs in the fourth before St. John's responded with two more in the fifth to push its lead back to eight, 10-2. Conniff tripled with two outs before scoring on an error that allowed Lazzaro to reach first. Lazzaro then scored from first on a Hogan RBI double in the next at-bat.
The Red Storm added one more run in the seventh on a Lazzaro RBI single.
