Red Storm and Musketeers will close their series tomorrow afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium
After being held to just one run and three hits through the first seven innings of Saturday's contest with St. John's at Jack Kaiser Stadium, Xavier exploded for 11 runs in the top of the eighth, as the Musketeers evened the series with a 12-3 victory.
Despite picking up the loss, St. John's starter Ian Murphy was impressive on the mound, carrying a no-hit bid into the fifth inning and striking out a career-high 11 batters in seven frames of work. Murphy scattered just three hits on 118 pitches and only one of his three runs was earned.
Carson Bartels singled and drove in two of the Red Storm's three runs. Ryan Hogan also recorded a run-scoring base knock for St. John's (10-6, 1-1 BIG EAST)
After sending just three batters to the plate in the first and second innings, St. John's got on the board in the home half of the third. With runners on first and second following a David Williams hit-by-pitch and a Jake Lazzaro walk, Hogan poked an RBI single to right to give St. John's a 1-0 lead. Bartels then lifted a sac fly to right center, scoring Lazzaro from third and making it a two-run game.
Following four innings of no-hit work from Murphy, Xavier (10-14, 1-1 BIG EAST) singled twice and brought home an unearned run in the fifth, cutting the St. John's lead to one, 2-1, after four and a half.
Neither side managed another run until the top of the eighth, when the Musketeers exploded for an 11-spot. 10 of the 11 tallies came with two outs and were unearned. Xavier logged just six hits in the inning, as the Red Storm committed two errors and surrendered four walks.
Brian Morrell led off the bottom of the eighth with a single before coming around to score a few batters later on a Bartels base knock to right.
St. John's threatened again in the ninth, before hitting into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded.
The Red Storm and Musketeers are scheduled to wrap their series tomorrow afternoon with a 1 p.m. tilt from Jack Kaiser Stadium on ESPN3.
