No. 9/9 Denver Downs St. John’s, 19-11, at Peter Barton Stadium

DENVER, Colo. (April 24, 2021) – The St. John's lacrosse team fell to No. 9/9 Denver, 19-11, on Saturday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
The Red Storm's (1-9, 0-9 BIG EAST) offense was led by Jonathan Huber, who scored four goals for the second consecutive game. Graduate Student Joe Madsen tied his season-high of five points with two goals and three assists. Midfielders Mackenzie Iacocca and Ryan Schaeffer each notched two goals this afternoon, with Schaeffer adding on a helper.
Freshman Jack Lutfi extended his point-scoring streak to five games as he collected a single goal today. Graduate student Mike Madsen dished out two assists while Patrick Ednie and Christian Rega added single helpers for the Johnnies.
Denver junior Alex Simmons found the back of the net four times on the afternoon. J.J. Sillstrop and Sam Dwinell collected two goals, and Sillstrop dished out one assist. The Pioneers had 11 players each find the back of the net in its final home game of the season.
The nationally ranked Pioneers (10-3, 8-1 BIG EAST) scored the first 15 goals of the afternoon. St. John's broke through in the eighth minute, scoring two of the games' next three goals before the end of the half. Huber opened up the scoring for the Johnnies in the second quarter off a pass from Joe Madsen. Ten minutes later, Joe Madsen found the back of the net on a man-up opportunity to trim the Johnnies' deficit down to 13, 15-2, at the intermission.
Schaeffer scored the first goal of the second half to cut into Denver's lead, 16-3. The Pioneers scored a minute later with a goal from Dwinell. The Red Storm responded with four-straight goals to pull the score back within ten, 17-7, after three quarters. During the scoring run, Huber, Schaeffer, and Joe Madsen each collated their second goal of the game while Iacocca added his name to the stat sheet for the first time.
The Red Storm carried its momentum into the final stanza, utilizing another scoring run, as Huber, Iacocca and Lutfi each tallied a goal in under three minutes. With the Pioneers leading by seven, 17-10, Dwinell scored his second goal of the game to extend Denver's lead to eight. At the 4:39 mark, St. John's would find the back of the net one last time, as Rega found an open Huber in front the net. With the score, Huber grew his season total to 21 goals. The Pioneers added one more score after Huber's goal to grow its lead back to eight and solidify the win.
St. John's will return to DaSilva Memorial Field this Friday, April 30, to host Marquette in its final game of the season. Opening faceoff is set for 12 p.m.
