Four Johnnies find the back of the net in win over Mountain Hawks
The St. John's women's soccer team dominated from start to finish, downing Lehigh, 4-0, on Thursday evening at Belson Stadium to remain unbeaten on the season.
With the win over the Mountain Hawks, St. John's improved to 3-0-1 on the year.
Four different Johnnies found the back of the net en route to the team's lopsided victory over the Mountain Hawks. Michelle Money, Brooke Boyd, Maia Cabrera and Ava Collins all scored for the first time this season.
Money netted the game-winner in the 38th minute for the first goal of her Red Storm career. With the tally, the Crofton, Md., native gave St. John's an early edge that would not relinquish. The senior midfielder also registered an assist on the evening for a game-high three points.
A trio of other Johnnies recorded helpers for the home team, as Isabelle Aviza, Kayla Mesaros and Jessica Garziano all picked up an assist on the evening.
St. John's goalkeeper Naya Lipkens registered her third shutout of the 2021 fall slate. The Bloomfield, Conn., native turned aside three Lehigh attempts to preserve the clean sheet for the Red Storm.
St. John's thoroughly dominated the possession game, outshooting the Mountain Hawks, 13-5, including a 6-3 edge in shots on goal.
With over 35 minutes of scoreless action from both teams, St. John's finally broke through in the 38th minute off a game-winning tally from Money. The play began as Mesaros send a long pass inside the box to Aviza. The Medway, Mass., native then tapped a pass back to Money, who buried it home to give St. John's a 1-0 lead at the half.
Coming out of the intermission, St. John's struck again in the 51st minute. Boyd, one of four Red Storm captains this season, converted on the Johnnies' second goal. The play started off a free kick from Athina Sofroniou. The rookie rocketed a shot into heavy traffic but Garziano quickly corralled the loose ball. The Melville, N.Y., native then send a pass back to Money who connected with Boyd for the goal, giving St. John's a 2-0 advantage.
The Red Storm continued to apply pressure over the second half upping its lead three in the 87th minute following a goal by Cabrera. The Rego Park, N.Y., native capitalized on a deflection off of the hands of Lehigh's goalkeeper to pick up the fourth goal of her Red Storm career.
Three minutes later, Collins became the eighth different member of the Red Storm squad to score a goal this season. The Auckland, New Zealand, native rocketed a shot from just outside the 18-yard box to the right corner of the cage, lifting the Red Storm's lead to four in the final seconds.
St. John's returns to action on Sept. 5, as the Johnnies travel to Cambridge, Mass. for a 1 p.m. matchup with Harvard.
