St. John’s Falls to No. 9/9 Rutgers in Season Opener

Dylan Willis tallies a game-high three assists in the losing effort
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 12, 2022)- The St. John's lacrosse team fell to no. 9/9 Rutgers, 23-6, on Saturday afternoon at DaSilva Memorial Field.
The Scarlet Knights saw 10 different players record goals on an unseasonably warm February day in Queens, as Rutgers moved to 3-0 on the year.
The Red Storm's leading scorer from last season, Jonathan Huber led the Johnnies' offense with a pair of goals. Freshman Brian Kelly tallied a goal and an assist in his collegiate debut while Patrick Ednie, Jack Lutfi and Connor Kalmus. each found the back of the net once.

St. John's freshman goalkeeper Kaden Quirk logged 14 saves in his collegiate debut.
The Scarlet Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Lutfi recorded the first goal of St. John's spring campaign midway through the first quarter, painting the top corner past the stick of the Rutgers keeper.
In the second quarter, Rutgers controlled possession and was able to steadily build its lead, adding four goals to take an 8-1 lead into the intermission.
After a Rutgers goal 13 seconds into the second half, St. John's responded with two quick tallies. Willis evaded a swarm of defenders and fed Ednie, who fired it into the top corner of the net. 2:10 later, Willis found another Red Storm veteran in Huber, who scored the first of his two goals to make it 9-3. A lengthy Rutgers run ensued, as the Scarlet Knights netted nine straight goals over the final 9:51 of the third period. Rutgers attackman Ross Scott buried four of his game-high five goals during this stretch.
In the fourth quarter, the Johnnies showed resilience, adding three goals in the final 12 minutes. Kelly curled around the net for an unassisted goal, the first of his collegiate career, a few minutes after Kalmus notched his first goal of the season. Huber scored the game's final goal with just seven seconds remaining.
St. John's will hit the road for the first time this season on Feb. 19, traveling to Lewisburg, Pa., to take on Bucknell. Opening face-off from Christy-Mathewson Stadium is slated for 12:30 p.m.
