Saturday’s contest will mark Head Coach Jason Miller’s 200th career game at St. John’s
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's lacrosse team will face its first road opponent when it meets RV/RV Bucknell on Saturday afternoon in Lewsiburg, Pa.
The start time is slated for 12:30 p.m., the contest will be streamed on ESPN+ with Sam Kuperman on the call from inside Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
In its inaugural contest of the spring, the Red Storm fell to no. 9/9 Rutgers last Saturday at DaSilva Memorial Field. In the opener, Dylan Willis dished out a trio of assists for a team-high three points. Jonathan Huber netted two second half goals against the Scarlet Knights, the attackman's scoring streak now sits at nine games. The Great River, N.Y., native has recorded 15 points in his last four contests, dating back to last season. Brian Kelly, Jack Lutfi, Patrick Ednie and Connor Kalmus all added goals in the season opener.
Defensively, Furman transfer Corey Hall fielded a team-high four groundballs and forced two Rutgers turnovers. Short-stick defensive midfielder Matt Duncan has provided a spark to the Red Storm lineup, the senior caused a career-high three turnovers in the opener.
Saturday's contest will be just the second-ever meeting between these two programs. On Feb. 17, 2007, Bucknell defeated St. John's, 10-4, marking the first game of Jason Miller's coaching tenure at St. John's. Now in his 16th season at the helm, Saturday's game will be his 200th career game leading the Red Storm.
Bucknell will enter Saturday's matchup with a 2-0 record and have garnered national attention, receiving votes in both the Inside Lacrosse and USILA national polls. The Bison opened the season with a 16-14 victory at Mercer before clinching another win away from home, at Robert Morris, 14-12.
The Bison have been led by standout freshman attackman Connor Davis, through two games he has posted 10 goals on just 19 shots. In his collegiate debut, the Bethesda, Md., product netted a Bucknell freshman record-breaking six goals at Mercer. The rookie attackman currently sits T-4th in the NCAA in goals per game with 5.0 and first among freshman in that category.
St. John's is 20-22 all-time against the Patriot League. Saturday's tilt will be the first since 2015 the Red Storm have squared off against a current member of the conference. The last victory over a Patriot League team came on Feb. 15, 2014, when it beat Holy Cross, 15-13.
Following its matchup in Lewisburg, Pa., the Johnnies will be back in action inside of the Empire State, when they face Stony Brook in Hempstead, N.Y. on Feb. 25 at 6 p.m.
