Red Storm will take on Ducks for the first time since 2015
QUEENS, N.Y.- After playing four games in Wilmington, N.C., the St. John's baseball team will hit the road once again and head to the Pacific Northwest for four games against the Oregon Ducks. First pitch on Friday from PK Park is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. The three remaining games on Saturday, Sunday and Monday will start at 5 p.m. ET.
Live stats for all games will be available through StatBroadcast.com. Fans can watch all four games on Pac-12 Network+ and listen via the Oregon Sports Network.
The Red Storm dropped its season opener on Friday to Middle Tennessee State before winning its first game of the year against the same Blue Raiders in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. St. John's then squared off against UNC Wilmington for two games on Saturday and Sunday, falling to the Seahawks, 12-6 and 6-5, respectively.
The Johnnies will look to win their second-straight series against a Pac-12 opponent after taking two out of three from the Cal Golden Bears in three games in February of 2020.
Ian Murphy will headline this weekend's rotation on Friday night. Murphy posted yet another strong outing on opening day, tossing 7.0 innings, striking out five and allowing two runs on four hits. The redshirt junior out of Swedesboro, N.J., has now allowed two runs or fewer in five straight starts dating back to 2021. Left-handers Ben Adams and Oliver McCarthy will start on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Monday's starter is to be determined.
Out of the bullpen, freshman Dylan Johnson made a strong impression in his collegiate debut in Saturday's win over Middle Tennessee State. Johnson pitched 4.0 scoreless innings, scattering two hits and striking out two Blue Raiders to pick up the win. Redshirt sophomore Tim Cunningham also provided a big lift for the Johnnies, making two appearances on the weekend and only allowing one run in 4.1 innings of relief.
Two newcomers impressed in their Red Storm debuts at the plate last weekend. Shortstop Kevin Michaels batted .538 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored to earn a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Virginia transfer Tate Ballestero had at least one base hit in all four games in Wilmington and is currently hitting at a .438 clip to sit at second on the team behind Michaels.
Sophomore Chris Conniff leads the team in on-base percentage, reaching at .625 clip. The infielder reached in all four games last weekend and tallied three hits, six walks and one hit-by-pitch. Conniff also scored three runs to tie for the team lead.
Redshirt sophomore David Glancy made his presence felt last weekend, recording two hits in three of the four games. The Neptune, N.J., native also scored a run in three out of four contests and added a walk and an RBI. Glancy currently sits third on the team with a .400 batting average.
Oregon dropped its opening series at San Diego and currently sits at 1-3. As a team, Oregon is hitting .326 with .931 OPS while the pitching staff owns an 8.72 ERA.
Despite their record, the Ducks have four batters hitting .500 or better, led by sophomore catcher Josiah Cromwick at .578. Two players were named to Collegiate Baseball's Preseason All-America Team as outfielder Tanner Smith and closer Kolby Somers were both named to the magazine's third team.
The Johnnies and Ducks have squared off once, a three-game series in 2015 with the Ducks swept. Two of the three previous meetings have been decided by two runs or less.
The Red Storm went on to win the BIG EAST regular season and tournament titles that season.
