Red Storm sends 18 student-athletes to compete against conference’s best
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's track and field team will head to Chicago to compete against the best in the conference at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships. The two-day event from the Gately Indoor Track and Field Facility will start on Friday at 9 a.m.
The entire meet will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports.
The Johnnies have finished fourth or better as a team in the last seven BIG EAST Championships.
Graduate student sprinter Leah Anderson will look to add to her dominant resume in BIG EAST Championships. The last time she competed at the indoor conference championships in 2020, Anderson was named the BIG EAST Most Outstanding Performer and High-Point Performer after collecting wins in the 200 and 400-meter dashes as well as the 4x400-meter relay. Anderson will aim to join Youree Spence and Pariis Garcia as the only Johnnies with five or more event wins at the conference championships. The Mount Vernon, N.Y., native will go for her 12th win of the indoor season when she competes in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes along with the 4x400-meter relay.
Skyy Diop will race in the 400-meter and 200-meter dashes alongside Anderson. Diop has tallied several strong finishes this season, placing in the top five in every 400-meter race she has competed in. This weekend will mark just the third time this season the Ontario native will run the 200-meter dash, most recently, she finished seventh at the Rutgers Open.
Claire Cushing and Mia Forster will lead the Red Storm in the distance category. Both will compete in the 3,000-meter run. Cushing registered her best performance in the 3,000-meter run this season with a time of 10:01.92 and a win at the Bill Ward Invitational back in December. Forster will compete in the event for the third time this season. The graduate student from Marblehead, Mass., set her best time of the season with 10:16.28 at the Villanova Indoor Meet in January.
In the field events, Amanda Belgrave will set her sights on continuing her strong senior season. Belgrave notched top-10 finishes in the long jump and triple jump last time out at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships. She will look to become the first Johnnie since 2016 to win a jump event at the conference championships. Samantha Morillo is poised to add to the Red Storm's championship pedigree in the throwing events. St. John's has had a student-athlete win at least one of the throwing events in four out of the last five years.
