Kevin Michaels leaves the yard twice in six-RBI effort
QUEENS, N.Y. – Redshirt sophomore Kevin Michaels had a career day for the Red Storm, pacing the St. John's offense in a 15-4 win over Sacred Heart in Friday's series opener at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
Michaels, a native of Encinitas, Calif., went 4-for-5 with two home runs, a double and six RBIs. He became the first Johnnie to leave the yard twice in the same game and tallied six or more RBIs since David Glancy homered twice and drove in eight runs against Saint Peter's on March 10, 2020.
Glancy had quite the day himself, going 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored.
Carlos Hidalgo registered a career day at the dish, going 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
Luke Orbon logged his first career three-hit game, driving in two runs and scoring twice in the process. Tate Ballesteroalso had a multi-hit effort, his sixth of the season, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored and a pair of RBIs.
All nine St. John's batters reached base at least once on Friday afternoon.
Ian Murphy started for the Johnnies (3-14), surrendering only two runs across 4.0 innings of work. Ben Adams picked up his first win of the season, allowing one run on two over 3.2 frames. Tim Cunningham held Sacred Heart (1-15) scoreless over the final 1.1 innings.
Sacred Heart got on the board early in the top of the first, as Sam Mongelli launched a one-out solo shot to left field to give the Pioneers and early 1-0 lead.
St. John's answered the call in the home half of the frame, plating three runs to quickly erase the Sacred Heart advantage. With one out and the bases juiced, Michaels pushed a two-RBI single through the right side before coming around to score in the following at-bat on a Hidalgo base knock up the middle.
After Murphy set the Pioneers down in order in the top of the second, the Red Storm added onto its lead with four more runs in the bottom of the inning. Glancy scored the inning's opening run all the way from first base on a Ballestero single down the right-field line. Ballestero moved to third on an Orbon single to center before Michaels scored them both with a double down the line in right. Michaels came around himself in the following at-bat, taking third on a Hidalgo single before scoring on a fielding error by the first baseman to make it 7-1 in favor of St. John's.
Neither team scored again until the top of the fifth when the Pioneers plated two runs, one of which was unearned, to trim the St. John's advantage to four, 7-3.
St. John's answered with authority in the home half of the frame, scoring six runs to take its largest lead of the season to that point, 13-3. Michaels led off the inning with a solo shot to left before a run-scoring walk was issued to White and Glancy lifted a sac fly to right later in the frame. Ballestero and Orbon added two-out RBI hits, as the former doubled down the left field line and the latter laced a two-run single up the middle.
Both teams went down 1-2-3 in the sixth before Glancy launched a towering solo shot to left in the seventh to make it 14-3 in favor of the Red Storm.
Sacred Heart scored one in the top of the eighth before Michaels launched his second round tripper of the day in the home half of the inning.
The Red Storm and Pioneers are scheduled to resume the three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. from Jack Kaiser Stadium.
