St. John’s Evens Series with 7-3 Win over Quinnipiac

Joe Joe Rodriguez picks up his first win of the season
QUEENS, N.Y.- Behind strong pitching and timely offense, the St. John's baseball team evened the series with Quinnipiac with a 7-3 victory at Jack Kaiser Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Joe Joe Rodriguez picked up his first win of the season with a strong seven-inning effort. Rodriguez tallied four strikeouts while not allowing an earned run over 115 pitches.
Nick Cirelli led the way for the Red Storm (8-15) at the plate with a 3-for-4 effort with a double and 3 RBIs. All three of Cirelli's RBIs came with two outs. The redshirt junior has now elevated his batting average to a solid .299.
Jackson Tucker has now reached base in 17 straight games, the longest on-base streak on the team, and was a constant threat on the basepaths. The freshman stole three bases and scored three runs to bolster the Johnnies' winning effort.
David Glancy and Colin Wetterau each added a double and a run scored. Glancy extended his hitting streak to 11 games with his two-base hit in the bottom of the first.
Kevin Michaels chipped in an RBI groundout and a run scored on Saturday.
Joe Mascio was solid in relief of Rodriguez, allowing only one hit in 2.0 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
For the second straight meeting, Quinnipiac (5-13) got on the board in first in the opening half-inning. After leadoff hitter Kyle Maves reached third on a two-base error and a sacrifice bunt, Keegan O'Connor grounded out to the shortstop to bring Maves home and give the Bobcats the early 1-0 edge.
The Red Storm responded with two runs of its own in the home half of the first to take the lead, 2-1. Tucker led off the frame with a walk before stealing second, and Glancy followed up with a double off the right-field fence. Michaels grounded out to third to bring Tucker home and tie the game at one. Wetterau gave St. John's the lead with a double that sent Glancy sprinting to the plate.
After a scoreless second inning, more offensive fireworks came in the third inning as the Bobcats retook the lead, 3-2, in the top of the inning. A single and an error set the table for Ian Ostberg who doubled to to score both baserunners and give Quinnipiac the one-run advantage.
The Johnnies answered with three more runs in the home half of the frame to wrestle the lead back, 5-3. After Tucker and Glancy reached base to lead off the inning, Ballestero put the ball in play to bring Tucker home and tie the game at three. Three consecutive walks brought Cirelli to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded, and the everyday first baseman delivered with a two-run single through the left side to give the Red Storm the lead once again.
St. John's added another run in the bottom of the fourth as Tucker stole second and third before scoring on a throwing error by O'Connor to extend the lead, 6-3.
The Red Storm added an insurance run in the fifth with another clutch two-out hit from Cirelli, a double that scored Carlos Hidalgo and grew the advantage to four runs, 7-3.
Rodriguez shut the Bobcats' offense down in the sixth and seventh before Mascio closed out the final two frames to secure the eighth win of the season for the Johnnies.
The rubber match between St. John's and Quinnipiac is scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch tomorrow at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
