David Glancy hit a home run in each game on Saturday
LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J.- The St. John's baseball team wrapped up the three-game series with Rider by splitting a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Sonny Pittaro Field.
Game One
The Johnnies used two big offensive innings to cruise past the Broncs, 9-0, in seven innings in the opening game of the doubleheader on Saturday.
David Glancy hit a grand slam, the first by a Johnnie since Jake Lazzaro against Sacred Heart on March 7, 2021. The redshirt sophomore went 1-for-3 with four RBIs, a run scored and a walk.
Jackson Tucker tallied a career-high three RBIs in a 2-for-3 effort with two runs scored and a walk.
Max Shabestari walked twice and scored two runs while four different Johnnies each crossed the plate once in the win.
Brandon Backman picked up his first win of the season, tossing 5.2 scoreless innings, striking out eight batters and only allowing four hits. Jake Alfaro and Dylan Johnson secured the final four outs of the game all by way of the strikeout.
After two scoreless frames, Tucker opened the scoring in the top of the third with a two-run single to left. Tate Ballestero and Kevin Michaels followed up with RBI singles to give the Johnnies an early 4-0 lead.
That was all Backman needed as the graduate righthander shut out the Broncs over the next three frames.
St. John's added five more runs in the top of the sixth to pull away from Rider, 9-0. Tucker drew a two-out bases-loaded walk to tally his third RBI of the contest before Glancy launched a ball over the wall in left center to provide more than enough breathing room for the Red Storm bullpen.
After Backman got the first two outs in the home half of the sixth, Alfaro struck out the final batter of the inning before Johnson breezed through the seventh to secure the win.
Game Two
Behind an offensive surge, Rider clinched the series win with a 13-6 triumph over St. John's on Saturday afternoon.
Glancy hit his second homer of the afternoon, a solo shot to left, while Jayson Kramer slugged the first round tripper of his career.
Chris Conniff, David Glancy, and David Williams each tallied an RBI while Michael recorded two runs scored.
Rider grabbed the early lead in the bottom of the first with four runs on three hits. With runners on first and second, Socrates Bardatsos smacked a two-RBI double to center before a Luke Lesch run-scoring single and a Brian O'Donnell sacrifice fly doubled the Broncs' advantage.
John Volpe recorded an RBI groundout in the top of the second to give Rider a 5-0 lead after two innings of play.
Kramer got the Johnnies on the board in the top of the third with a solo shot to right to tighten the game, 5-1.
The Broncs restored their five-run in the home half of the third when O'Donnell notched his second sac fly of the game to give Rider a 6-1 advantage.
St. John's refused to go quietly as Kramer doubled down the right-field line to bring the Johnnies within four once again, 6-2, after the top of the fourth.
Rider expanded the lead to 8-2 in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of a throwing error and an RBI single.
In the top of the sixth, Conniff earned an RBI the hard way, getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring home the third run for the Red Storm and bring the score to 8-3.
The Broncs began to pull away in the bottom of the sixth when Lesch unleashed a grand slam to give Rider a 12-3 edge.
Glancy launched a solo shot in the visitor half of the seventh before Rider added a run in the bottom of the eighth to make the score 13-4 heading into the ninth inning.
The Johnnies added two runs in the top of the ninth before Rider closed out the second game of the twin-bill to secure the series win.
St. John's will be back in action when it returns to Jack Kaiser Stadium to take on Fairfield. First pitch on Tuesday is set for 3 p.m.
