Huber scores a hat-trick in the loss at Cooper Field
WASHINGTON D.C.- The St. John's lacrosse team fell at the hands of no. 2/2 Georgetown, 23-6, on Saturday afternoon in the nation's capital
The nation's leader in goals per game, Dylan Watson paced the Hoyas on their Senior Day. The graduate student attackman fired in a game-high four goals and contributed an assist at Cooper Field.
Leading St. John's (2-11, 0-4) Jonathan Huber fired in a hat-trick, marking the seventh time this season the attackman has scored three goals or more this season. The Great River, N.Y., native now has 37 goals on the year and sits four shy of breaking Stefan Diachenko's single-season record, since the program's reinstatement in 2005 of 40 goals. He fired in 40 shots over 14 games during the 2015 campaign.
Brian Kelly led the team with four points on the afternoon, the freshman fired in one goal and dished out three helpers against the nation's top-scoring defense.
Josh Shoop and Bill Mahecha each added tallies in the fourth quarter that marked their first goals for the Red Storm this season.
Goaltender Kaden Quirk stopped 13 Georgetown (12-1, 4-0) shots on Saturday afternoon, marking the 10th straight outing he has logged double-digit saves.
The home side sprung out to a quick 6-0 lead before Huber's first of the day on a feed from Caleb Zuhoski put the Johnnies on the board.
Early in the second quarter, Kelly corralled a groundball off a face-off and tossed it high into the air amidst a sea of Hoyas defenders, the ball landed in the waiting stick of Huber, who scorched one into the net to make the score 7-2.
The Hoyas offense proceeded to have its way as they added the next nine tallies before Kelly broke up the run, firing in an unassisted goal with 7:02 remaining in the third period.
In the final period, Mahecha came off the bench and fired a close-range shot into the net. The tally marked the attackman's first collegiate goal. Shoop added his first goal of 2022 and the final one of the game, with 2:15 remaining on a dish from Mahecha.
In St. John's regular-season finale, it will host Providence on April 30 for a Senior Day battle at 12:30 p.m.
