Connor Kalmus enters the contest after a career-high four goal performance against No. 19 Villanova
QUEENS, N.Y. - For the second straight week, the St. John's lacrosse team will host a BIG EAST foe when it welcomes Marquette on Saturday at 12 p.m.
Saturday's contest will be streamed live on BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports. Pat O' Keefe will have the call from DaSilva Memorial Field.
The St. John's lacrosse team faltered against no. 19/19 Villanova, falling 22-9 in its BIG EAST opener last weekend. The Wildcats capitalized on the extra-man advantage four times in the first quarter and sustained their lead throughout to grab the conference opener on a windy day in Queens.
In the waning moments of Saturday's game, Jonathan Huber became the 13th player in St. John's lacrosse history to reach the 100-point mark. The redshirt senior has found the back of the net 80 times and dished out 20 helpers during his time as a Johnnie.
In Saturday's loss to Villanova, the prolific attackman netted a hat-trick, which marked the fifth game this season he has registered three goals or more. Huber has once again proven to be a trusty offensive weapon for the Red Storm attack. After leading the team in goal-scoring in 2021, the veteran has been firing on all cylinders, as he has tallied 25 goals and five assists through 10 games.
Connor Kalmus fired in a career-high four goals in Saturday's conference opener. After recording just one goal this season coming into Saturday's contest, the junior stepped up and led the team in scoring during the defeat.
In net for the Red Storm, Kaden Quirk has been racking up saves, as the freshman has logged 65 stops during his last four outings. On the year, Quirk has turned away 120 shots which ranks second among NCAA Division I freshman, trailing Colgate's Matt Lacombe by four stops. On April 2 against no. 19 Villanova, the Nahant, Mass., native set a new season-high with 18 saves against the Wildcats offense.
Freshman Brian Kelly continues to lead the team with 31 points (16 G, 15 A) on the season. In 10 games, the Red Hook, N.Y., native has already racked up the most points by a St. John's freshman since 2011. Johnnies all-time greats Kevin Cernuto posted 41 and Kieran McArdle logged 39 points during their rookie campaigns that year, respectively.
Saturday will mark the 10th meeting all-time between the two programs. In recent history, the two teams have fought until the horn sounds, as three of the last four contests have been decided by one goal.
In 2021, Marquette squeaked past St. John's in overtime, 9-8, in Milwaukee on April 14. In the Johnnies regular season finale that season, the Golden Eagles edged the Red Storm, 15-14, in Queens. Connor Kalmus registered his first career hat-trick and Patrick Ednie dished out three assists in that contest.
Marquette is fresh off a big win in its BIG EAST opener, as it moved past Providence 16-10. The Golden Eagles will arrive at DaSilva Memorial Field with a 3-6 record on the year. Freshman Bobby O' Grady has led the way for Marquette, pouring in 26 goals through nine contests. The rookie has earned three BIG EAST Freshman of the Week awards and broke the school's freshman record for goals against Providence.
