Men’s Tennis Notches a Pair of Wins Against Army and Marist

The Red Storm edged Army, 4-3, and swept Marist, 4-0
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 12, 2023) – The St. John's men's tennis team edged Army, 4-3, before a 4-0 sweep of Marist on Sunday afternoon at Lichtenberg Tennis Center in West Point, N.Y.
The Red Storm won its third and fourth match of the weekend to improve to 7-1 on the season.
In the first match, the Red Storm dropped the doubles point for only the second time of the season. Anton Stendal and Giuseppe De Camelis won the lone match for the Red Storm, 6-4 against Vishnu Bodavula and Samuel Eden. Army claimed victories at the first and second doubles slot to win the doubles point, 2-1.
In singles play, the Johnnies took four of the six matches. Carl Gustafsson defeated Thomas Lake, 6-3, 6-1. Sergio Molina notched a win against Jake Huarte, 6-2, 6-1. Nishant Dahas earned a victory in the fifth slot, 6-3, 6-3 over Daniel Zhou. In the only singles match to go three sets, Ryota Kaneda knocked off Jose Nathan 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
In the second match, the Red Storm made quick work of a sweep against Marist. Unlike against Army the Red Storm won the doubles point. Stendal and De Camelis won their second doubles match of the day with a 6-3 victory against Christian Mills and Moritz Daxboek. The Johnnies clinched the match on a victory in the No. 1 slot when Diogo Marques and Kaneda defeated Dylan Freidman and Nick Suhanitski, 6-4.
In singles play, St. John's was just as dominant. Three Johnnies won their match to clinch the victory and the three remaining singles matches were unfinished. The three victorious Red Storm players also won their singles contest in the earlier match. Gustafsson cruised past Tomas Gomez, 6-2, 6-1. Molina knocked off Alex Thompson, 6-2, 6-4 to improve his perfect singles record to 6-0. Dabas matched Molina with six wins on the seasons with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Paolo Flores.
St. John's will play a pair of home matches at USTA next week opening with Hofstra on Wednesday afternoon. The Red Storm will finish the week with a contest against Boston U. on Saturday afternoon.
