QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 23, 2023)- The St. John's track and field team will travel to Chicago to battle against the best in the conference at the BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Championships.
The two-day Dr. Conrad Worrill Track and Field Center event will begin on Friday at 10:00 a.m. ET with the throwing events. The entirety of the meet will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports.
The Red Storm will look to extend its streak of finishing fourth or better to nine consecutive seasons.
Brooklyn Chestnut and Tatyana McKenzie both enjoyed solid performances at last year's event as both reached the podium with bronze medals in the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes, respectively. Heading into the weekend, Chestnut is tied for the best mark in the BIG EAST in the 60 meters with a time of 7.52 that she recorded at the Villanova Indoor Invitational on Jan. 21. McKenzie leads the league in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.00 set in the Johnnies' win at the Metropolitan Championships at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Feb. 3.
Freshman Delicia Bent is poised to make an impact in her BIG EAST Championships debut. The Margate, Fla., native sits just behind McKenzie in the 200 meters in the league rankings with an impressive time of 24.13.
Fellow freshman Nora Haugen gave the sprints team a huge boost in her first year in the Red & White, holding top-10 times in the 200-meter and 400-meter races.
Nia Holden will look to anchor the middle-distance portion of the squad as she competes in the 800-meter run. Holden's season-best time of 2:11.03 puts her at ninth in the BIG EAST.
In the pole vault, Berit Friedenbach leads the way, owning a top-five ranking in the event in the league after clearing the 3.45-meter bar, a new school indoor record, at the MLK Tribute Meet on Jan. 16.
Cassandra Lemus-Sodji headlines the jumpers that will make the trip to Chicago. The freshman out of Seattle boasts three top-three finishes in the long jump, including a top-ten mark in the BIG EAST of 5.60 meters.
Samantha Morillo-Martinez will look to reach the podium for the second straight indoor conference championships after placing third in the shot put in 2022. In 2023, Morillo-Martinez owns two wins in the shot put and sits second in the BIG EAST in the event.
