The Johnnies are off to their best start since 2017
QUEENS, N.Y. (March 30, 2023) – After a wild finish on Tuesday, the St. John's baseball team will look to build upon its recent success at William & Mary, one of the top pitching staffs in the country, beginning on Friday.
Game one from Plumeri Park is slated for Friday at 6 p.m., followed by a 4 p.m. start on Saturday and a 1 p.m. first pitch on Sunday. Live stats will be available for all three contests on RedStormSports.com. FloBaseball will broadcast each game and fans can sign up by using this link.
The Johnnies (16-7), off to its best start since 2017, has won three of its last four games, including an 11-inning affair on Tuesday at Fairfield. In the 5-4 victory, the Red Storm caught a break in the 11th inning with Anthony Brienza on third when the Stags' plate protector made an illegal motion on a ball in the dirt. By touching a live ball with detached equipment, the catcher's facemask, Brienza advanced 90 feet and scored the eventual winning run in a similar fashion to a "catcher's balk," lifting the Johnnies to a one-run victory on the interference call.
Sophomore Luke Orbon drove in the game-tying run in the eighth inning following a 2-for-5 day at the dish. David Glancy and Marty Higgins also chipped in a base knock and an RBI on the afternoon while shortstop Jace Jeremiah added two tallies in Tuesday's contest. Tim Cunningham secured his first win of the year while Nick Cirelli registered his third save.
As of Thursday, the Johnnies remained among the nation's best with 57 doubles (21st in NCAA) and a .311 batting average (28th). The Red Storm have racked up 259 hits this season, good for 39th in Division I, while finding themselves leading the conference with a .408 on-base percentage.
The Red Storm and Tribe will face off for the first time since Feb. 16, 2002, a 7-6 victory in favor of William & Mary. However, SJU earned the first two wins of the series, both on the road. After a 4-2 triumph on April 8, 1980, St. John's earned a 9-6 victory on March 19, 1985. In both seasons, the Johnnies secured a berth to the NCAA Regionals with a College World Series appearance in 1980.
The Tribe (15-11) is coming off a 3-2 victory over No. 15 Campbell, winning four of its last five games. Nate Knowles, Zach Tsakounis, and Carter Lovasz combined to allow just three hits and strike out 10 Camels in the victory. Knowles picked up his third win on the season and Lovasz earned his third save.
William & Mary ranks 12th in the nation with a 3.36 ERA as a team, seeing Tsakounis post a sub-two ERA at 1.98, good for 46th in Division I.
Offensively, the Tribe is one of the top-scoring teams in the country, averaging 8.8 runs per game (24th) while swiping 49 bases (21st) and producing a .429 on-base percentage (27th).
Ben Williamson leads the charge with a .426 batting average and a .532 on-base mark, both ranking inside the top 30 in Division I. The reigning CAA Defensive Player of the Year has also racked up four triples this season, good for sixth in the nation.
