The Johnnies dropped the series opener on a final play of the game
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The St. John's baseball team fell to William & Mary, 4-3, at Plumeri Park on Friday evening.
Tate Ballestero and David Glancy provided the run support on back-to-back jacks while Luke Orbon and Jackson Tucker tallied two hits apiece.
After a pair of scoreless frames to start the game, the Johnnies (16-8) unloaded a three-run third inning. With Tucker reaching on a single and swiping second, Ballestero drilled a 3-1 pitch down the right-field line for a two-run shot. Two pitches later, Glancy roped a solo homer to straightaway center for a 3-0 advantage.
William & Mary (16-11) broke through in the home half of the third on a solo home run by Nate Goranson to left field, slashing its deficit to two, 3-1.
Starter Xavier Kolhosser pounded the zone over the next two innings, stranding baserunners in the fourth and fifth before finishing his five frames of action with a career-high seven strikeouts. The sophomore also allowed just one run on two hits in his outing.
The Tribe slashed its lead in half, 3-2, after dropping an RBI single behind the shortstop in the sixth. William & Mary closed the gap in the bottom of the seventh on double play that brought the runner home from third, tying the game at three.
The Johnnies threatened in the top of the eighth, putting runners on first and second following a walk to Austin Machado and an Aaron Mann base knock. The Tribe caught a break as Luke Orbon smacked a hot shot to the left side, but too hard for pinch runner Anthony Brienza to avoid for final out of the inning.
In the bottom of the ninth, William & Mary's Goranson singled to start the inning before advancing to third on back-to-back putouts from Tim Cunningham and Jake Alfaro, respectively. Unfortunately, another tough break for the Red Storm as the first base umpire called the runner safe on a high throw that lifted Mann off the bag, scoring the winning run from third for a 4-3 setback.
St. John's will return to Plumeri Park on Saturday for game two of its series with William & Mary with first pitch slated for 4 p.m.
