St. John’s Set to Host The Big Hurt on Saturday

Red Storm to compete in first home meet of the season
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's track and field team will open the month of April by hosting The Big Hurt at DaSilva Memorial Field on Saturday. The meet will start at 11 a.m. from Queens.
There will also be a presentation for St. John's Athletics Hall of Famer Jim Hurt for his contributions to the Red Storm track and field program at 11:45 on the field.
The Red Storm return to the Empire State after a successful two-meet trip in Florida at the USF Invitational and Hurricane Collegiate Invitational to commence the 2023 outdoor campaign.
Jamora Alves had a dominant performance at the Hurricane Collegiate Invitational last week, setting personal best marks in the discus throw and the shot-put toss and setting a Grenada national record with her discus heave of 52.84 meters. Alves leads the BIG EAST and ranks 25th in the nation in the discus. The freshman also paces the conference in the shot put with her launch of 14.78 meters in Miami last week. For her efforts, the Carriacou, Grenada, native earned BIG EAST Women's Field Athlete of the Week honors on Wednesday.
Tatyana McKenzie has been putting on a show in the first two events of the outdoor season. The graduate student leads the BIG EAST in the 100 (11.81), 200 (23.52) and 400-meter dashes (54.51). McKenzie's 200-meter time ranks in the top 30 among all women's track athletes in the nation while her 400-meter mark ranks 51st in the NCAA.
Another first-year Johnnie, Delicia Bent owns top-five marks in the BIG EAST in the 100 and 200-meter races at 11.88 and 24.91, respectively. Chinenye Onuorah and Nora Haugen sit second and third, respectively, in the conference in the 200-meter dash. Onuorah owns a time of 24.63 while Haugen boasts a mark of 24.72. Brooklyn Chestnut ranks fourth in the league in the 200 with a time of 24.89.
Cassandra Lemus-Sodji headlines the jumps team, owning the fourth-best mark in the long jump with a leap of 5.62 meters, just .04 meters off her personal best in college. Three pole vaulters, Meghan Ladd, Berit Friedenbach and Colette Metcalf, hold top-five results in the BIG EAST with Ladd leading the way after clearing the 3.45-meter bar at the Hurricane Collegiate Invitational good for third in the league.
