St. John’s Drops Saturday’s Contest to Seton Hall

Red Storm logged nine hits in setback
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's baseball team fell to Seton Hall, 8-3, at Jack Kaiser Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Aaron Mann and Luke Orbon tallied two hits apiece, combining for four of the team's nine hits on the afternoon.
St. John's (18-14, 2-3 BIG EAST) broke through in the bottom of the first after seeing Orbon beat out an infield single and David Glancy legged out a double to left. With runners on second and third, Mann plated the Johnnies' right fielder on an RBI groundout to short, lifting the Red Storm to a 1-0 edge.
Seton Hall (17-16, 3-2 BIG EAST responded with one run in the top of the second as Mark McNelly hit a solo homer to knot the game at 1.
After a blank third frame, the Pirates scored another run on an Alex Clyde RBI single in the top of the fourth to take a 2-1 advantage.
The Johnnies threatened in the home half with back-to-back singles by Mann and Austin Machado, putting runners on the corners with two outs, but Seton Hall staved off the first-and-third jam.
Sophomore Dylan Johnson dominated in relief, going 3.1 innings of no-hit ball and allowing just two total baserunners. Despite allowing an unearned run, 3-1, in the seventh, the Selden, N.Y., native faced just 12 batters and struck out one.
St. John's capitalized in the bottom of the seventh, tying the game at three apiece with a two-run frame. Jace Jeremiah brought Machado around to score on an RBI grounder to short before Jackson Tucker found a hole through the left side to knock in Marty Higgins for a 3-3 deadlock.
Seton Hall poured it on over the final two innings with a pair of home runs, scoring five unanswered tallies before knocking off the Red Storm.
St. John's will return to Jack Kaiser Stadium on Sunday for its series finale against Seton Hall with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
