Jackson Tucker becomes first Johnnies with two triples in a game since 2014
Sophomore Jackson Tucker went 3-for-5 with two triples and three RBIs in Saturday's contest, marking the first Johnnie since Michael Donadio to hit a pair of three-baggers at Hofstra on March 25, 2014.
David Glancy logged a pair of hits at the Jack while joining Austin Machado with two RBIs apiece. Tate Ballestero went 2-for-4 at the dish, driving in one run and matching teammate Luke Orbon with two tallies.
The Johnnies (18-15, 2-4 BIG EAST) found themselves in a 2-0 hole with the bases loaded in the opening frame when Orbon reeled in a line drive from right field and launched a perfect strike to Ballestero at the plate, turning the double play and ending Seton Hall's threat.
The Red Storm countered in the bottom of the first with a three-spot. After back-to-back singles from Orbon and Glancy, Ballestero laced an RBI double to the left-center gap, bringing the Johnnies within one, 2-1. Following an RBI groundout that saw Glancy avoid a tag at the dish to tie the game, Kevin Michaels took a 2-2 pitch down the left-field line for another RBI two-bagger and a 3-2 Red Storm lead.
Seton Hall (18-16, 4-2 BIG EAST) quickly responded in the top of the second, tallying three runs in the frame, two of which came on sacrifice flies.
St. John's retaliated again with a two-run frame in the home portion of the second. Tucker slapped a one-out triple to dead center before Orbon was plunked by the first pitch he saw, putting runners on first and third. After the Johnnies' right fielder advanced to second on a wild pitch, Glancy pulled a 2-2 offering into the left-field corner, plating both runners and deadlocking the game at five.
The Pirates blew the game open with a five-run third inning, capitalizing on a pair of Red Storm miscues and taking a 10-5 advantage.
In the bottom half of the same frame, St. John's plated another run on an RBI poke by Tucker, driving in Machado from second and pulling the Johnnies to within four, 10-6.
Following a blank fourth inning, The Hall tacked on two more runs in the fifth to go up by six, 12-6.
Reliever Nick Cirelli pitched a gem out of the bullpen, logging four strikeouts and allowing just four hits across 3.1 innings of scoreless action.
While the Martinez, Calif., native kept the Pirates at bay, the Red Storm battled back to cut its deficit to two in the seventh. Ballestero laced a double to right and swapped positions with Mann on an RBI two-bagger of his own for a 12-7 score. After the Johnnies' first baseman advanced to third on a wild pitch, Machado knocked him in on a sacrifice fly and brought the Johnnies within four. Anthony Brienza and Marty Higgins smacked back-to-back singles before coming around on Tucker's second triple of the game and cutting the team's deficit in half, 12-10.
The Red Storm nearly tied the game in the eighth, loading the bases on a pair of plunks and a base on balls, but the Pirates got themselves out of the jam. Seton Hall also allowed a Jimmy Keenan single in the ninth before closing the door on the series.
St. John's will embark on a four-game road trip, beginning in Teaneck, N.J., on Wednesday against Fairleigh Dickinson. First pitch for the midweek matchup is slated for 3 p.m.
