Center fielder David Glancy smacks 10th home run of the season
Center fielder David Glancy reached double-digit home runs on the season, smacking his 10th, part of a 1-for-2 day at the plate with three runs scored and four walks. Austin Machado also found himself on base five times on Saturday, going 2-for-2 with three base on balls, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Aaron Mann and Tate Ballestero also chipped in two RBIs on the afternoon. Marty Higgins had a stellar day at the hot corner, registering eight assists with seven direct putouts at first and one double play.
The Red Storm (22-22, 3-9 BIG EAST) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning after loading the bases on three straight walks with Ballestero knocking in Glancy on a sacrifice fly.
Following a one-run frame by Villanova in the top of the second, the Johnnies managed to reclaim the lead with one of their own in the home half. With the bases juiced for the second-straight inning, Machado drew a five-pitch walk that knocked in Jackson Tucker for a 2-1 edge.
Both teams were held off the board until the Wildcats added two tallies in the fourth inning, taking a 3-2 lead.
St. John's quickly responded once again with a three-run bottom of the fourth. With two outs and runners on the corners, Mann smacked a two-run double to right-center, scoring Jace Jeremiah and Machado to go up by one, 4-3. Five pitches later, Ballestero roped an RBI single to right and bumped the Red Storm lead to two, 5-3.
After an empty fifth inning, the Wildcats returned the favor with a three-spot of their own to take a 6-5 edge.
In the bottom half of the frame, Glancy emphatically smashed a 2-1 offering 432 feet for a solo shot, tying the game at six. The Johnnies capitalized on a Michael Whooley throwing error to regain the lead, 7-6.
Once again, Villanova found a way to deadlock the game at seven with an RBI double from Collin Quintano. The Wildcats continued to threaten with a runner on second, but Luke Orbon saved a run from scoring after sliding up the middle, reeling in the grounder and getting the runner at first for the final out of the inning.
The Red Storm jumped back in front with a two-spot in the seventh as Machado slapped an RBI single to left. However, the Wildcats' right fielder misplayed the roller that sent him racing to the wall and allowed Glancy to score from first for a 9-7 advantage.
After a blank eighth frame, Villanova remained patient at the dish in the ninth, garnering two walks and a plunk before scoring on a wild pitch and a two-run single up the middle for a 10-9 lead.
St. John's threatened in the final frame with a walk to Higgins, who advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, but fell just short in the ninth.
The Johnnies will return to Jack Kaiser Stadium for its series finale against Villanova on Sunday with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
