QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's soccer team will begin its two-match Midwest road swing at Butler on Thursday night for a 7 p.m. contest.
The BIG EAST battle will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network from the Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis.
The Red Storm enter with an even 5-5-5 record on the year and are seeking a BIG EAST victory on the road.
The last time out on Oct. 17, the Red Storm fell to then-No. 20 Xavier, 3-0, at Belson Stadium. Malene Nielsen recorded 10 saves, which sat one shy of her career-high and was highest mark by a Red Storm goalkeeper since Maria O'Sullivan logged 10 stops in the BIG EAST Quarterfinal at Providence on Oct. 26, 2023.
Jailene DeJesus and Jordyn Levy continue to lead the Johnnies offensively tying for the team-high with six goals on the year. The senior duo is tied for sixth in the BIG EAST in goals scored.
Following her season-high 10-save performance, Nielsen has logged 47 stops on the year while splitting time between the pipes with Kayla Bower.
Athina Sofroniou is the staple of the Red Storm backline and is the only player to play every minute this season tallying 1,350 minutes at the center back position.
Butler enters the match with an 8-4-3 record and a 3-2-2 mark in BIG EAST competition. The Bulldogs have been in quality form as of late logging wins in each of their last two road games in the Northeast over Seton Hall and UConn. In its last time out, Butler headed in a game-winner in the 84th minute from Amelie Darey to take down Seton Hall, 1-0, in South Orange, N.J.
Talia Sommer leads the charge for the squad having tallied eight goals on the year, which ranks fifth overall in the conference. The junior ranks second in the league with a .600 shot percentage and scored both goals in the 2-1 victory at UConn on Oct. 17.
Anna Pierce ranks second in the league and 51st nationally with six shutouts on the year in goal for Butler.
The Red Storm have held the edge recently winning each of the last two meetings by a 3-1 scoreline. The Johnnies lead the all-time series, 6-4-2, and are 3-1-1 over the last five meetings. Last year, St. John's downed Butler at home, 3-1, Levy, Ava Collins and all-time program great Jessica Garziano tallied goals in the win at Belson Stadium. During the last meeting in Indianapolis, the Red Storm walked away with the same scoreline behind goals from Collins, Garziano and Nicole Gordon.
Following Thursday's match, the Red Storm will take on DePaul in the Windy City on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.
